CHAPTER 13 THE MAN BEHIND THE MIRROR

The chamber fell silent.

Adrian stared at the man who had just stepped out of the glass cylinder.

His father.

His brother.

His original.

He no longer knew what to call him.

The man looked at him with exhausted eyes.

Then he whispered again.

“Don't trust your grandfather.”

Adrian's gun remained raised.

“Give me one reason.”

The man smiled bitterly.

“Because he's been lying to you since before you were born.”

Behind Adrian, Vincent shifted his stance.

“Boss…”

Adrian didn't look away.

“Stay with the girls.”

Vincent nodded.

The man took another step.

“My name is Marco.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“That was my father's name.”

“It was.”

“Then why do you look like me?”

Marco looked at him.

“Because you were made from me.”

Adrian swallowed.

“And who am I?”

Marco's expression softened.

“You're my son.”

Adrian's voice dropped.

“You just said I'm you.”

“I said you were made from me.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No.”

Marco looked toward Lily.

“But it is close enough to destroy everything your grandfather built.”

The old man's cane struck the floor.

Once.

The sound echoed through the laboratory.

“You've always been sentimental, Marco.”

Marco turned.

“You're still alive.”

“I told you I would be.”

“You told me I would die.”

The old man's smile disappeared.

“You were supposed to.”

Marco laughed.

“You've been trying for thirty years.”

“And you keep disappointing me.”

Adrian looked between them.

“What is going on?”

Neither answered.

Adrian raised his weapon higher.

“Someone is going to start talking.”

His grandfather looked at him.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Then lower the gun.”

“No.”

The old man sighed.

“You inherited your mother's temper.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“You knew my mother.”

“I created her.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

The old man smiled.

“Now you're listening.”

Anna stepped forward.

“What does that mean?”

The old man looked at her.

“Your mother was not merely a woman.”

Anna's face tightened.

“She was a scientist.”

“She was an experiment.”

Anna shook her head.

“No.”

“She volunteered.”

“Why?”

“To save her children.”

Anna's breathing changed.

“What children?”

The old man pointed toward Adrian.

“All of them.”

Adrian looked at Anna.

“Your mother knew about the experiments?”

Anna nodded slowly.

“My mother disappeared when I was six.”

“She didn't disappear.”

The old man's voice was cold.

“She ran.”

“From you?”

“From what she had helped create.”

Anna's eyes filled with anger.

“You killed her.”

“No.”

“Then where is she?”

The old man didn't answer.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Where is she?”

Still nothing.

Adrian's voice became deadly quiet.

“Where is my mother?”

The old man finally said:

“Below us.”

Adrian's face went pale.

“What?”

“Her body is still here.”

Anna covered her mouth.

“No.”

“Your mother died protecting the final genetic sequence.”

Adrian stared.

“Which sequence?”

The old man looked at Lily.

“That one.”

Lily stepped backward.

Adrian immediately moved in front of her.

“No.”

His grandfather smiled.

“Exactly.”

Suddenly, the laboratory doors opened.

Armed men flooded inside.

Vincent fired first.

The room exploded into gunfire.

Adrian grabbed Lily and dropped behind a steel console.

“Anna!”

“I'm here!”

“Get Claire!”

Anna pulled Claire behind cover.

Sarah crouched beside them.

Vincent fired toward the entrance.

“Too many!”

Adrian looked at Marco.

“Can you move?”

Marco nodded.

“I've been waiting thirty years.”

Marco grabbed a metal pipe.

Then he charged.

He moved faster than Adrian expected.

One man went down.

Then another.

Adrian stared.

Even after decades inside a laboratory, his father still knew how to fight.

“Who trained you?” Adrian shouted.

Marco smiled.

“Your grandfather.”

Another gunshot.

Marco dropped.

“Dad!”

Adrian ran toward him.

Blood spread across Marco's shirt.

“I'm fine.”

“You've been shot.”

“I've survived worse.”

Adrian looked toward the attackers.

“Who are they?”

Marco grabbed his wrist.

“Not Volkov.”

“Then who?”

“Your grandfather's private army.”

Adrian looked toward the old man.

“Why are you trying to kill us?”

The old man didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Lily.

“Because she knows too much.”

Lily suddenly spoke.

“I know where the room is.”

Everyone stopped.

Adrian turned.

“What room?”

“The room where Mommy died.”

Sarah's face went white.

Adrian stared.

“You've never been here.”

Lily shook her head.

“Yes, I have.”

“When?”

“In my dreams.”

Adrian's chest tightened.

“What did you see?”

“A white room.”

“Anything else?”

“A woman.”

“Your mother?”

Lily shook her head.

“Your mother.”

Adrian froze.

The old man's expression changed.

For the first time, genuine fear crossed his face.

“How?”

Lily pointed toward a wall.

“There.”

Adrian followed her finger.

Nothing.

Just concrete.

Lily walked toward it.

She placed her palm against the wall.

A hidden mechanism clicked.

The wall opened.

Behind it was a narrow passage.

Anna stared.

“She remembered the access code.”

Adrian looked at Lily.

“How?”

Marco answered.

“Because her memories were never erased.”

Adrian turned.

“What?”

“They were buried.”

“Why?”

“Because your daughter wasn't supposed to remember herself.”

They entered the hidden passage.

Adrian kept Lily close.

The corridor ended at another steel door.

Lily touched it.

It opened.

Inside was a small room.

A chair.

A desk.

A single photograph.

And a woman.

Or what remained of her.

Adrian stopped breathing.

His mother.

Elena Moretti.

Her body had been preserved inside a transparent medical chamber.

Anna collapsed against the wall.

“Mom…”

Adrian couldn't move.

For years he had believed she was dead.

Now he was looking at proof.

The old man's voice came from behind them.

“She sacrificed herself for you.”

Adrian turned.

“You kept her here.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To finish her work.”

“She refused.”

“She changed her mind.”

“No.”

The old man looked at Lily.

“She understood what Lily was.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“What is she?”

His grandfather smiled.

“The only human being who can repair Subject Zero.”

Marco shook his head.

“That's not why you want her.”

“No.”

The old man looked at him.

“I want her because she can rewrite the genetic sequence.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Rewrite it into what?”

“Immortality.”

Silence.

Vincent stared.

“You're insane.”

The old man laughed.

“That's what every generation says about the one that comes before it.”

Anna walked toward her mother's chamber.

A monitor beside it suddenly activated.

A recording appeared.

Elena Moretti.

Alive.

Young.

Terrified.

“If you're watching this…”

She paused.

“…then I failed to destroy the system.”

Adrian stepped closer.

His mother's voice continued.

“Marco, if you survived, forgive me.”

Marco lowered his head.

“I couldn't save you.”

Elena continued:

“The children are not experiments.”

“They are not copies.”

“They are not weapons.”

“They are human beings.”

The recording changed.

Images appeared.

Adrian as a baby.

Anna as a baby.

Claire as a baby.

Lily.

Then another image.

A newborn boy.

Adrian stared.

The label beneath him read:

SUBJECT ZERO.

But there was something different.

The baby's name:

MICHAEL.

Adrian whispered:

“Who is Michael?”

Marco looked at him.

“Your older brother.”

Adrian stared.

“I thought you said he died.”

“He did.”

“Then why is he in the file?”

Marco's face changed.

“Because your grandfather brought him back.”

The recording continued.

Elena's voice became urgent.

“Michael was the first successful reconstruction.”

Adrian's blood ran cold.

“He was unstable.”

“He suffered from the same heart condition.”

“He began losing memories.”

“So your grandfather created Adrian.”

Marco whispered:

“No.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Then who?”

Marco stared at the screen.

“Me.”

Adrian froze.

“You created me?”

“I tried to.”

“Why?”

“To save Michael.”

“But Michael died.”

“Yes.”

“And I survived.”

Marco nodded.

“You were never meant to replace him.”

“What was I meant to be?”

“A donor.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“A donor?”

“Your organs were genetically compatible.”

“You created me to give him my heart?”

Marco looked devastated.

“Yes.”

Adrian stepped backward.

Lily grabbed his hand.

“Daddy…”

He looked down.

For the first time, she saw fear in his eyes.

Not fear of death.

Fear of the man who had given him life.

Marco spoke quietly.

“I changed my mind.”

“When?”

“The day I held you.”

Adrian stared.

“You remember?”

“I remember everything.”

“What happened?”

“I took you and ran.”

“From my grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did I end up here?”

Marco looked at the old man.

“Because he found us.”

Adrian's grandfather smiled.

“You always were a terrible liar.”

Marco ignored him.

“I hid you in another family.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Which family?”

Marco looked at Sarah.

Adrian slowly turned.

Sarah was crying.

Adrian's voice cracked.

“You knew.”

Sarah nodded.

“I knew who you were.”

“How?”

“Your mother told me.”

“When?”

“Before she died.”

Adrian's eyes filled with anger.

“You knew I wasn't really Adrian.”

“I knew enough.”

“You let me believe my whole life was a lie.”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

“You all keep saying that.”

His voice broke.

“Everyone says they were protecting me.”

He looked at Lily.

“Everyone except the people who should have told me the truth.”

Sarah stepped closer.

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

“You don't understand.”

“No.”

Adrian shook his head.

“I understand perfectly.”

A loud alarm suddenly sounded.

The entire facility began shaking.

Marco looked at the ceiling.

“He's activating the reactor.”

Adrian looked at his grandfather.

“What reactor?”

“The one beneath the laboratory.”

“Why?”

Marco grabbed Adrian.

“Because he doesn't need the Ledger anymore.”

Adrian stared.

“What does he need?”

Marco looked toward Lily.

“Her.”

The floor split.

A massive mechanical platform rose from beneath them.

At its center stood a circular chamber.

The same technology as the glass cylinder.

But larger.

More advanced.

The old man stepped toward it.

“Bring me the girl.”

Adrian raised his weapon.

“No.”

The old man smiled.

“Then watch everyone you love die.”

The chamber activated.

A red light swept across the room.

Every monitor began displaying the same message:

GENETIC TRANSFER READY.

Adrian looked at Marco.

“What does that mean?”

Marco's face was filled with horror.

“He's going to transfer Lily's genetic sequence into himself.”

Adrian turned.

“Can he do that?”

“Not without killing her.”

Adrian's gun rose.

“Then he dies first.”

The old man laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

He pointed toward Adrian's chest.

“The transfer requires a compatible host.”

Adrian's expression changed.

Marco whispered:

“Adrian…”

The old man smiled.

“You.”

Adrian felt the world go silent.

“You want my body.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your heart is the perfect bridge.”

Adrian stared.

His grandfather continued:

“Lily will provide the genetic correction.”

“You will provide the host.”

“And I will provide the consciousness.”

Adrian's face went cold.

“You're going to put yourself inside me.”

“Exactly.”

Vincent stepped forward.

“Boss, we need to leave.”

Adrian didn't move.

His grandfather smiled.

“You can't run.”

The doors locked.

“Your heart condition is already progressing.”

Adrian looked at the monitor.

His pulse was irregular.

He knew what that meant.

The old man continued.

“You have weeks.”

“Maybe months.”

“But with Lily's genetic sequence…”

“You could live forever.”

Adrian laughed.

“Not if you have my body.”

“Then I will take it.”

Adrian looked at Lily.

She was crying.

He crouched in front of her.

“Listen to me.”

“Daddy…”

“Whatever happens…”

He held her face gently.

“You stay behind Vincent.”

“I don't want to.”

“I know.”

“You promised.”

Adrian's throat tightened.

“I know.”

He kissed her forehead.

Then stood.

His expression changed.

The fear disappeared.

The uncertainty disappeared.

Only one thing remained.

A father's decision.

He looked at his grandfather.

“You want my body?”

“Yes.”

“You want Lily?”

“Yes.”

“You want immortality?”

“Yes.”

Adrian raised his gun.

“Then come take them.”

His grandfather smiled.

“Gladly.”

The machines activated.

Electricity surged through the chamber.

Marco shouted:

“ADRIAN, DON'T!”

Adrian stepped forward.

His heart began racing.

The old man entered the machine.

The chamber doors closed.

A massive countdown appeared.

TRANSFER INITIATION: 60 SECONDS

Adrian looked at Lily one last time.

Then at Anna.

Then Claire.

Then Sarah.

Then Vincent.

He whispered:

“Get them out.”

Vincent shook his head.

“I'm not leaving you.”

“You're not asking.”

Adrian stepped into the second chamber.

The door closed behind him.

Lily screamed.

“DADDY!”

Adrian placed his palm against the glass.

She placed hers against the other side.

Their hands aligned.

He smiled through the glass.

“I finally gave you a face.”

Lily cried.

Adrian whispered:

“Now I need to make sure you never lose it.”

The countdown reached:

10

9

8

Inside the first chamber, Adrian's grandfather smiled.

7

6

Marco screamed:

“THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN HACKED!”

5

Adrian looked up.

“What?”

4

Every screen went black.

3

A new message appeared.

TRANSFER REDIRECTED.

2

The old man's smile disappeared.

1

A voice echoed through the laboratory.

Not Marco.

Not Cross.

Not Adrian.

A woman's voice.

Elena Moretti.

“Begin reversal.”

The machines exploded with light.

The old man screamed.

And Adrian felt something enter his mind.

A memory.

A woman's arms.

A newborn crying.

A father whispering:

“This one will never belong to us.”

Adrian opened his eyes.

The chamber shattered.

And when the smoke cleared—

his grandfather was lying unconscious on the floor.

Adrian stepped out.

Alive.

But his eyes were different.

Lily ran toward him.

“Daddy!”

Adrian caught her.

She wrapped her arms around his waist.

He held her tightly.

Then she pulled back.

“Your eyes.”

Adrian blinked.

“What about them?”

“They changed.”

Anna stepped closer.

Her face went pale.

Adrian looked toward the shattered glass.

His reflection stared back.

His eyes were no longer the same color.

One was blue.

One was green.

The same eyes Lily had drawn.

The same eyes from the first picture.

Adrian touched his face.

Then he remembered.

Everything.

Every erased memory.

Every hidden room.

Every death.

Every lie.

And one final memory appeared.

A voice from his childhood.

His father's voice.

“If they ever make another one of me, he must never know the truth until Lily is old enough to choose.”

Adrian looked at his daughter.

He finally understood.

The drawings had never been a warning.

They had been a map.

Lily had been leading him home.

But somewhere deep inside the laboratory, a computer suddenly activated.

One final file appeared.

SUBJECT 39.

STATUS: ACTIVE.

Adrian stared.

Then another line appeared.

LOCATION: MANHATTAN.

And beneath it:

IDENTITY: UNKNOWN.

Adrian's face hardened.

The war wasn't over.

It had only changed its shape.

He looked at Vincent.

“Find Subject Thirty-Nine.”

Vincent nodded.

Adrian held Lily's hand.

This time, he didn't let go.

Because whatever waited for them in the darkness—

he would face it as her father.

Not a shadow.

Not a secret.

Not a faceless man.

Her father.

And somewhere beneath Manhattan, another heart began beating.

Slowly.

May you like

Steadily.

Waiting.
