While the adults argued, Maisie tugged gently on my hand.
"Mom?"
I knelt beside her.
She touched my cheek.
"Did Grandpa really mean I'm not his granddaughter?"
The question silenced the room again.
No legal document.
No argument.
No amount of money could erase what had happened.
I brushed a strand of hair from her face.
"No, sweetheart."
She looked confused.
"But he said..."
"I know what he said."
I smiled softly.
"But people who stop loving children because of blood don't understand what family really means."
She wrapped her arms around me.
"I like our family better."
Behind us, someone quietly began crying.
It wasn't my mother.
It wasn't Chelsea.
It was Aunt Linda.
She walked over and knelt beside Maisie.
"I'm sorry."
Maisie looked at her.
"I should have helped you."
One by one, other relatives approached.
Some apologized.
Some admitted they had been afraid of my father for years.
Fear had built this family.
