CHAPTER 7 — THE BROTHER THEY STOLE

The man at the bottom of the stairs didn't move.

Neither did Sarah.

For several seconds, the entire house seemed to hold its breath.

Snow blew through the shattered windows.

The red emergency light painted the hallway in a dim, bloody glow.

Lily stared at the stranger.

The stranger stared back.

Then Lily whispered:

"You're my brother."

His jaw tightened.

Sarah's heart hammered against her ribs.

She looked at the man again.

Same dark eyes as Lily.

Same narrow shape of the face.

Same faint scar beneath the left eyebrow.

He looked older, of course.

Maybe seventeen.

Maybe eighteen.

But there was something unmistakably familiar about him.

Something she couldn't explain.

"Who are you?" Sarah demanded.

The stranger didn't answer.

Mark raised his weapon.

"Step away from the child."

The stranger slowly lifted his hands.

"I'm not here to hurt her."

Sarah's voice shook.

"Then why are you here?"

His eyes remained fixed on Lily.

"Because they told me she was dangerous."

Lily frowned.

"I'm not dangerous."

The young man's expression changed.

For a moment, something like regret crossed his face.

"I know."

Then a voice came through the speakers.

Jonathan Mercer.

"Subject Six."

The young man looked upward.

"Don't."

Mercer's voice remained calm.

"You know the protocol."

The young man's fists tightened.

"I know."

"Then complete your assignment."

Sarah stepped forward.

"What assignment?"

The young man looked at her.

His eyes were full of conflict.

"They want Lily."

Sarah moved in front of her daughter.

"They'll have to kill me first."

The young man stared at her.

"No."

His voice was barely audible.

"They don't want to kill you."

Sarah frowned.

"They want you alive."

"Why?"

"Because you still carry the original memory."

Sarah's blood ran cold.

"What original memory?"

The young man looked toward the stairs.

"The night everything started."

Mark stepped closer.

"Who are you?"

The stranger finally answered.

"Daniel."

Sarah's breath caught.

"Daniel what?"

"Daniel Carter."

Sarah stared.

"Your brother."

"No."

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"Your son."

The words struck her harder than a bullet.

Sarah couldn't breathe.

She looked at Lily.

Then back at Daniel.

"That's impossible."

Daniel shook his head.

"They told me you were dead."

Sarah whispered:

"They told me you were never born."

Daniel looked down.

"That's because I wasn't supposed to survive."

Silence.

Then Lily stepped out from behind Sarah.

"Lily!"

Sarah grabbed her.

But Lily shook her head.

"He won't hurt me."

"How do you know?"

She looked at Daniel.

"I remember him."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I remember you too."

Sarah stared.

"How?"

Daniel touched his chest.

"Because they put your memories inside me."

Sarah froze.

"What?"

"Not all of them."

Daniel looked at her.

"Only the ones they wanted to preserve."

Thomas appeared behind Sarah.

"Memory transfer."

Daniel nodded.

"That's what they called it."

Thomas's expression hardened.

"When?"

Daniel answered:

"When I was six."

Sarah's stomach turned.

"You were six?"

Daniel nodded.

"They took me from the facility."

"What facility?"

"The Winter Division."

Sarah stared at him.

"They told me my mother abandoned me."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Your mother?"

Daniel looked directly at Sarah.

"You."

Sarah covered her mouth.

"No."

"You were there."

"I don't remember."

"I know."

Daniel looked toward the hidden room.

"They erased you."

Mark stepped forward.

"Why?"

Daniel answered:

"Because you tried to stop them."

Sarah shook her head.

"What did I do?"

"You found out what they were doing to us."

"To you?"

Daniel nodded.

"To me. To Evan. To dozens of children."

Sarah looked at Thomas.

"Why would my father allow this?"

Daniel's expression hardened.

"He didn't."

Sarah froze.

"What?"

"Your father tried to shut it down."

Thomas looked shocked.

"That isn't what the records say."

"Because they changed the records."

Daniel pointed toward the hidden room.

"The truth is in the original archive."

Sarah remembered the black case.

"The archive."

Daniel nodded.

"Mercer has been searching for it."

Mark asked:

"Where is it?"

Daniel looked at Sarah.

"Inside the house."

Sarah frowned.

"We already found the key."

Daniel shook his head.

"That wasn't the key."

Thomas stepped forward.

"Then what was it?"

Daniel looked toward the music box.

"A decoy."

Sarah stared.

"Why would my father leave a decoy?"

"To see who came looking."

A cold silence filled the room.

Daniel continued.

"Anyone who found that key was supposed to activate a signal."

Sarah looked at the brass key.

"We activated it."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

Reeves cursed.

"That's how they found us."

Mark looked at him.

"So the whole thing was a trap."

Daniel shook his head.

"Not exactly."

"What then?"

"It was a test."

Sarah looked at Daniel.

"For whom?"

"For me."

She didn't understand.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel's eyes moved to Lily.

"They wanted to see whether I would protect her."

Sarah's voice softened.

"And did you?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Mercer's voice came through the speakers again.

"Daniel."

Daniel looked upward.

"You have thirty seconds."

"Or?"

"You know what happens."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Sarah stepped toward him.

"What happens?"

Daniel looked at her.

"They activate the implant."

Sarah's blood ran cold.

"Implant?"

Daniel nodded.

"They put something inside me when I was six."

Thomas's face became pale.

"Neural regulator."

Daniel looked at him.

"You know what it is?"

Thomas nodded.

"It can suppress memories."

"And emotions."

Thomas stared.

"Yes."

Daniel's voice became bitter.

"They made me obedient."

Lily looked at him.

"But you aren't."

Daniel smiled sadly.

"Not anymore."

A sharp tone sounded from somewhere inside his body.

Daniel suddenly doubled over.

Sarah screamed.

"Daniel!"

He dropped to one knee.

Mark grabbed him.

"What's happening?"

Daniel gasped.

"They activated it."

Thomas rushed forward.

"Hold him."

Mark pinned Daniel's shoulders.

Daniel screamed.

His hands clawed at the floor.

Sarah looked horrified.

"Stop!"

Thomas opened his medical bag.

"I need tools."

"What tools?"

"Anything sharp."

Sarah stared.

"You're going to cut him open?"

"No."

Thomas pointed toward Daniel's neck.

"The regulator is beneath the skin."

He pulled out a small scanner.

"There's a control node."

"Can you disable it?"

"Maybe."

"Do it."

Thomas scanned Daniel.

A red light flashed.

He frowned.

"Mercer has remote access."

"Can you block it?"

"I need the source."

Daniel suddenly gasped.

Then became still.

His eyes opened.

They were different.

Cold.

Empty.

He looked at Sarah.

"Where is Lily?"

Sarah froze.

Daniel stood.

Mark stepped backward.

"Daniel?"

Daniel reached for his weapon.

Mark raised his.

"Don't."

Daniel's voice was emotionless.

"Where is Subject Seven?"

Sarah pulled Lily behind her.

Daniel raised the gun.

Then suddenly his hand began trembling.

His eyes filled with tears.

"No..."

He fought himself.

"Run."

Sarah stared.

Daniel pointed the weapon at his own head.

"RUN!"

Mark lunged.

He knocked Daniel's arm aside.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

Mark tackled him.

Daniel screamed.

"Get Lily out!"

Sarah grabbed her daughter.

They ran.

Thomas followed.

Reeves came last.

They rushed into the hidden room.

Sarah slammed the door.

Mark was still fighting Daniel in the hallway.

Sarah looked at Thomas.

"What do we do?"

Thomas pointed toward the wall.

"There's another exit."

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

She looked at Lily.

"We're not leaving Mark."

Reeves stepped forward.

"I'll get him."

Sarah grabbed his arm.

"No."

Reeves stared at her.

"Sarah."

"You've been lying to me."

"Yes."

"You knew about my mother."

"Yes."

"You knew about Daniel."

"Not until tonight."

Sarah stared at him.

"Then prove it."

Reeves nodded.

He turned.

Before he could leave, the hidden room door opened.

Mark stumbled inside.

Daniel followed.

But he wasn't attacking.

He was holding the door closed.

"Go."

Mark looked at him.

"What happened?"

Daniel was breathing heavily.

"I broke the signal."

Thomas stared.

"How?"

Daniel touched the side of his neck.

"I remembered."

Sarah stepped closer.

"What did you remember?"

Daniel looked at her.

"The password."

Thomas froze.

"What password?"

Daniel smiled.

"The one your father used."

Sarah frowned.

"What is it?"

Daniel whispered:

"Home."

Thomas looked at the computer.

He entered the word.

The screen came alive.

A hidden folder appeared.

ORIGINAL ARCHIVE — FAMILY ACCESS ONLY.

Sarah stared.

"That's it."

Thomas clicked.

Hundreds of files appeared.

But before anyone could open them—

The entire house shook.

An explosion erupted downstairs.

Sarah screamed.

Windows shattered.

Dust filled the room.

Mark grabbed Lily.

"DOWN!"

Another explosion.

Then the house lights returned.

But the computer screen displayed something new.

A live video feed.

Jonathan Mercer appeared.

He sat in a dark office.

Calm.

Perfectly dressed.

"Sarah."

She stared at him.

Mercer smiled.

"You finally opened it."

Sarah stepped toward the screen.

"You killed my family."

Mercer shook his head.

"No."

"You experimented on children."

"I funded research."

"You stole my brother."

"I protected him."

"You stole my son."

Mercer's expression changed slightly.

"Daniel was never yours."

Sarah's eyes burned.

"He is my child."

Mercer leaned forward.

"No."

His voice became cold.

"He belongs to the program."

Daniel stepped toward the screen.

"Not anymore."

Mercer stared at him.

"You'll regret that."

Daniel smiled.

"I already do."

Mercer pressed something.

Daniel suddenly collapsed.

Sarah screamed.

"Daniel!"

Thomas rushed to him.

"His implant."

Mercer's voice continued.

"Bring me Lily."

Sarah stood.

"No."

"Then Daniel dies."

Sarah looked at her son.

His body was shaking.

Mark raised his weapon toward the computer.

"You touch him again and I'll find you."

Mercer laughed.

"You don't know where I am."

Mark's eyes narrowed.

"We will."

Mercer smiled.

"Then perhaps I should give you a reason to come."

The screen changed.

A live satellite image appeared.

A massive facility in the mountains.

Sarah recognized it immediately.

"The mountains."

Mercer nodded.

"The place where Mark supposedly died."

Mark stared at the screen.

His face became pale.

"No."

Mercer smiled.

"Welcome back."

The video changed again.

A photograph appeared.

A woman with white hair.

Sarah stopped breathing.

"Mom?"

It was Elena.

Alive.

Older.

Her face thinner.

But unmistakably her.

She was sitting inside a glass room.

Mercer spoke.

"Your mother has been waiting for you."

Sarah couldn't move.

Elena looked directly into the camera.

Her lips moved.

No sound came through.

Sarah stared.

Then the audio returned.

A whisper.

"Sarah..."

Sarah covered her mouth.

Her mother was alive.

Mercer smiled.

"And she knows where the original archive is."

Sarah looked at Thomas.

"What does he mean?"

Thomas stared at the screen.

"He means the archive isn't here."

Mercer nodded.

"Exactly."

Sarah looked at Elena.

"Where is it?"

Mercer leaned back.

"Come and ask her."

The screen went black.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Lily touched Sarah's hand.

"Mommy?"

Sarah looked down.

"Yes?"

Lily whispered:

"Grandma is scared."

Sarah's heart broke.

"How do you know?"

Lily looked at the blank screen.

"Because I can feel it."

Thomas slowly turned toward Sarah.

"That's impossible."

Daniel, still lying on the floor, whispered:

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

He opened his eyes.

"That's exactly what they were afraid of."

Sarah knelt beside him.

"What?"

Daniel looked at Lily.

"She's connected to Grandma."

Sarah stared.

"How?"

Daniel whispered:

"Because the first transfer wasn't from your father to you."

He looked at Sarah.

"It was from Elena to Lily."

Sarah's breath stopped.

"And that's why Lily remembers the red room."

Daniel nodded.

"She didn't inherit your memories."

He looked toward the dark computer.

"She inherited Grandma's."

Sarah stared at her daughter.

Then at the mountain facility on the dead screen.

Her mother was alive.

Her stolen son was beside her.

Her brother was wounded.

And the child she had spent seven years protecting was carrying memories that could expose an entire government program.

Sarah stood.

"We're going to the mountains."

Mark looked at her.

"Sarah—"

She shook her head.

"No more running."

She picked up the black archive case.

"We go together."

Reeves nodded.

Thomas grabbed the documents.

Daniel slowly stood.

Lily took his hand.

Sarah looked at all of them.

"For seven years, they controlled what we knew."

She looked toward the window.

Snow continued falling outside.

"That's over."

Then her phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Sarah looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

She answered.

No one spoke.

Then a woman's trembling voice whispered:

"Sarah..."

Sarah's heart stopped.

"Mom?"

Elena's voice came through the phone.

"Don't trust Mercer."

Sarah closed her eyes.

"I won't."

A pause.

Then Elena whispered:

"And don't trust Reeves."

Sarah slowly turned.

Daniel looked at Reeves.

Mark raised his weapon.

Reeves went completely still.

Elena's voice became desperate.

"He's the reason your father died."

The call ended.

Silence.

Every eye in the room turned toward Daniel Reeves.

He slowly lowered his weapon.

"I can explain."

Mark's face hardened.

"Then start talking."

Reeves looked at Sarah.

And for the first time since they had met him—

he looked genuinely afraid.

"Your mother is right."

Sarah's heart dropped.

"I killed your father."

The room went silent.

"But not for the reason you think."

Reeves looked at the mountain image still frozen on the computer.

"Your father asked me to."

Sarah stared.

"Why?"

Reeves swallowed.

"Because he knew what would happen if Black Winter ever discovered the truth."

Sarah's voice became barely audible.

"What truth?"

Reeves looked at Lily.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at Sarah.

"Your father wasn't trying to destroy Project Echo."

He paused.

"He was trying to complete it."

Sarah's face went pale.

Reeves continued:

"And Lily wasn't the final subject."

He looked toward the dark window.

"She was the key to waking every other subject."

Outside, somewhere beyond the snow-covered neighborhood, a distant engine started.

Then another.

Then another.

They were coming.

And this time, Sarah knew exactly what they wanted.

Not her.

Not Mark.

Not Daniel.

They wanted Lily alive—

May you like

because if Lily remembered everything,

the dead would start speaking.
