Chapter 5 — A Different Legacy

One year later, Sophie walked through another ballroom.
This time there were no accusations.
No fear.
No raised voices.
Only laughter.
The event wasn't a wedding.
It was the grand opening of the Sophie Bennett Children's Justice Foundation, created to provide legal and emotional support for children falsely accused or abused by adults in positions of trust.
The foundation occupied the renovated Whitmore Hotel conference center—the very place where the truth had first been revealed.
A bronze plaque stood beside the entrance.
It read:
"Truth may arrive late, but it never forgets the way."
Sophie, now smiling again, tugged gently on Evelyn's hand.
"Mom?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Do you think they're still angry with us?"
Evelyn knelt beside her daughter.
"No."
"They're living with something much harder than anger."
"What?"
"The truth."
Sophie thought for a moment before taking her mother's hand.
Together they walked toward the crowd waiting inside.
Not as victims.
Not as survivors seeking revenge.
But as two people who had discovered that justice isn't about destroying those who hurt you.
It's about refusing to let their cruelty define the rest of your life.
