CHAPTER 2:The Wedding That Never Happened

CHAPTER 2:The Wedding That Never Happened
Ryan didn't ask another question.
He simply nodded once.
"I've got you."
He turned toward the backyard while I carried Ellie against my chest.
Outside, nearly two hundred guests sat patiently beneath white canopies, smiling toward the aisle.
The string quartet was halfway through another song.
Vanessa stood beneath the rose arch, breathtaking in her custom-made ivory gown.
She smiled the moment she saw me.
Then she noticed Ellie.
Her smile disappeared.
For one split second.
Only one.
Most people wouldn't have noticed.
I did.
The wedding planner hurried toward us.
"There you are! Everyone is waiting."
I kept walking.
Straight past the aisle.
Straight toward the altar.
Every guest turned.
Confused whispers spread through the chairs.
Vanessa forced another smile.
"There you are, sweetheart."
She reached toward Ellie.
My daughter buried her face deeper into my shoulder.
That was all the answer I needed.
Vanessa lowered her hand.
"Daniel?"
I stood beside the officiant.
He looked relieved.
"Wonderful. Shall we begin?"
"No."
The single word echoed louder than the microphones.
The music stopped.
Even the birds seemed to fall silent.
The officiant blinked.
"I'm sorry?"
"We're not getting married."
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Daniel..."
"This isn't funny."
"I agree."
I turned to face every guest.
"I owe everyone here an apology."
My mother stood.
Ryan quietly moved beside me.
Melissa looked between us with growing concern.
Vanessa's parents exchanged confused looks.
Vanessa walked closer.
"Can we please talk privately?"
"No."
Her expression hardened.
"Daniel."
"No more private conversations."
She lowered her voice.
"You're embarrassing me."
I stared at her.
"My daughter has been crying in a locked bathroom for nearly twenty minutes."
Silence.
The words landed like a bomb.
Vanessa blinked.
"What?"
"You heard me."
She laughed.
"Oh my God..."
Then she looked around at everyone.
"She's a child."
Exactly.
"A frightened child."
Vanessa folded her arms.
"I never locked anyone anywhere."
Ellie whispered into my shoulder.
"You did..."
Vanessa's smile vanished again.
"Honey..."
"Don't."
I stepped backward.
"You don't get to call her honey."
Guests began murmuring.
Someone stood to leave.
Someone else pulled out a phone.
Vanessa looked at Ellie.
"Tell them the truth."
Ellie didn't answer.
Vanessa sighed dramatically.
"This is exactly what I warned you about."
My stomach tightened.
"What?"
"She still isn't adjusting."
Several guests frowned.
Vanessa continued.
"She's had emotional problems since Emma died."
Ryan exploded.
"What the hell did you just say?"
Vanessa ignored him.
"Children sometimes create stories."
I looked at Ellie.
She was shaking harder now.
That wasn't grief.
That was fear.
I knew the difference.
I had spent four years learning it.
I carefully set Ellie on her feet.
"You don't have to say anything."
She squeezed my hand.
Then reached into the pocket hidden inside her flower girl's dress.
"Daddy..."
She pulled out a tiny pink object.
"My recorder."
I frowned.
"The one Grandma gave me."
It was a small digital voice recorder disguised as a toy.
My mother gasped.
"I bought that so she could record bedtime stories."
Ellie nodded.
"I forgot it was recording."
Ryan slowly took the recorder.
Every eye followed him.
Vanessa's face turned white.
"No."
Ryan pressed PLAY.
At first...
Only footsteps.
Rustling fabric.
Then Vanessa's voice.
Calm.
Cold.
Crystal clear.
"Listen carefully, Ellie."
Silence.
"I need you to stay in this bathroom."
"But the wedding..."
"The wedding is exactly why."
A pause.
"You'll understand when you're older."
"I promised Daddy—"
"I know what your father promised."
Vanessa laughed softly.
"But promises change."
Another pause.
"After today, I'm Mrs. Callahan."
"I'm his family too."
"You are."
"But families grow up."
"What does that mean?"
"It means he'll finally have a real wife again."
Ellie's tiny voice cracked.
"My mommy—"
"Your mommy is gone."
Complete silence.
Then...
"I'll be the woman who matters now."
A sob.
"You'll have to learn your place."
The recording ended.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Vanessa looked around desperately.
"That's edited."
Ryan stared at her.
"It recorded continuously."
She pointed at Ellie.
"She's manipulating everyone."
That sentence finished her.
Even her own parents looked horrified.
Her father slowly removed the boutonniere from his jacket.
"I raised you better than this."
Vanessa turned toward him.
"Dad..."
"No."
He walked away.
Her mother followed without another word.
Around them...
Guests quietly stood.
One by one.
Leaving the ceremony.
Not because I asked.
Because they had heard enough.
Within five minutes...
The perfect wedding became an empty garden.
May you like
Only scattered rose petals remained.
And one abandoned altar.
