Chapter 3 – The Wedding That Never Happened

The ballroom inside The Grand Astoria shimmered beneath thousands of crystal lights.

The city's wealthiest families filled every table.

Journalists waited outside.

Everyone expected the wedding of the year.

Charlotte entered in a custom-made gown worth nearly two hundred thousand dollars.

The orchestra began to play.

Then the music stopped.

Adrian had walked onto the stage alone.

He wasn't wearing the smile the photographers expected.

Instead, he held a single microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

Confused whispers swept across the room.

"I owe every one of you an apology."

Charlotte's expression hardened.

"What are you doing?"

Adrian ignored her.

"I built this celebration on the belief that I knew the woman I was marrying."

He looked directly at Charlotte.

"I was wrong."

Gasps spread through the ballroom.

"You humiliated a child who had done nothing except exist."

Charlotte laughed nervously.

"Adrian, stop embarrassing yourself."

"No."

His voice became firmer.

"I'm done allowing wealth to excuse cruelty."

Charlotte stepped closer.

"She's the maid's daughter!"

"No," Adrian replied.

"She's a little girl."

Silence.

The difference between those two sentences changed everything.

"I cannot promise to love someone who measures another person's worth by the clothes they wear or the family they were born into."

He removed the engagement ring from his pocket.

"I won't build a family with someone who teaches children shame."

The ring landed softly on the table between them.

"Our wedding is canceled."

Reporters rushed forward.

Camera flashes exploded across the ballroom.

Charlotte stood frozen while every guest watched the perfect image she had spent years creating collapse in less than sixty seconds.

Adrian walked out without looking back.
