CHAPTER 10 — THE NAME DIEGO WHISPERED

The helicopter lifted off twenty minutes later.
Ricardo sat opposite Valeria.
Neither spoke.
The USB drive was in his pocket.
The photograph was beside him.
And in his mind, one question kept repeating.
Where was I really born?
The pilot's voice came through the headset.
“Twenty minutes to the estate.”
Ricardo looked at Valeria.
“You've been there.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before Diego was born.”
“Why?”
Valeria looked down.
“To meet Isabela.”
“What did she tell you?”
“That your father had lied to everyone.”
“About me?”
“About everything.”
Ricardo's jaw tightened.
“What happened to her?”
Valeria didn't answer.
“You owe me the truth.”
“I know.”
“What happened?”
Valeria finally whispered:
“She showed me the original birth records.”
Ricardo stared.
“And?”
“She told me your father wasn't the man you thought he was.”
Ricardo looked away.
The helicopter continued through the darkness.
Below them, Mexico disappeared into mountains.
After twenty minutes, lights appeared beneath them.
A large estate.
Hidden among dense trees.
Ricardo recognized it from the photograph.
The house where he had supposedly never been.
The helicopter landed.
Ricardo jumped out.
Valeria followed.
The front door was open.
Too open.
Ricardo entered.
The house smelled old.
Dust.
Wood.
Something metallic.
Blood.
He stopped.
“Diego?”
No answer.
He moved through the hallway.
A child's shoe lay near the stairs.
Diego's.
Ricardo picked it up.
His chest tightened.
“Diego!”
A faint sound came from upstairs.
A knock.
Three times.
Ricardo ran.
He reached a bedroom.
Locked.
He kicked the door.
Nothing.
Again.
The lock broke.
Inside—
empty.
A small mattress.
A glass of water.
A blanket.
And a note.
Ricardo picked it up.
HE IS NOT HERE.
Underneath:
YOU'RE GETTING CLOSER.
Ricardo crumpled the paper.
Then he heard Valeria scream.
He ran back downstairs.
Valeria stood in front of a wall.
Her face had gone white.
“What?”
She pointed.
Ricardo approached.
There were dozens of photographs.
Children.
Families.
Documents.
Dates.
Names.
One photograph showed Ricardo as a teenager.
Another showed him at his wedding.
Another showed Diego as a baby.
Someone had been watching the family for decades.
Ricardo's eyes moved across the wall.
Then he saw one name repeated over and over.
JAVIER MENDOZA.
He looked at Valeria.
“Why is Javier everywhere?”
“He wasn't just your father's security chief.”
“What was he?”
Valeria whispered:
“His eyes.”
Ricardo frowned.
“He watched everyone.”
“Who?”
“You.”
“Why?”
“Because your father didn't trust you.”
Ricardo stepped back.
“Why wouldn't he trust me?”
Valeria stared at him.
“Because he believed someone had replaced you.”
Ricardo's face hardened.
“Replaced me?”
“Yes.”
“That’s insane.”
“Your father believed you had been taken when you were eight.”
Ricardo remembered.
A flash.
A dark room.
A woman's voice.
Someone holding his hand.
Then nothing.
He had always thought it was a nightmare.
But now—
he remembered.
A woman.
Isabela.
She was crying.
She had said:
“Don't let them make you forget your name.”
Ricardo staggered backward.
Valeria grabbed his arm.
“You remember.”
He pulled away.
“Yes.”
“What do you remember?”
“My aunt.”
Valeria's eyes filled with tears.
“What else?”
“A room.”
“What room?”
“White walls.”
Ricardo closed his eyes.
A child's voice echoed in his memory.
His own voice.
“Where's my father?”
Then a man's voice.
Javier.
“Your father isn't coming.”
Ricardo opened his eyes.
“He was there.”
Valeria nodded.
“Yes.”
“Javier was there when I disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“Then my father knew.”
“He did.”
“Why did he let it happen?”
Valeria shook her head.
“He didn't.”
Ricardo stared.
“Your father spent years looking for you.”
“But I came back.”
“No.”
Valeria's voice broke.
“You didn't.”
Ricardo's face changed.
“What?”
Valeria looked at him.
“The boy who returned to your father…”
She paused.
“…wasn't you.”
Silence.
Ricardo couldn't move.
“What did you say?”
“Your father thought he got you back.”
“But?”
Valeria whispered:
“He got another child.”
Ricardo shook his head.
“No.”
“The records were changed.”
“No.”
“The DNA test was changed.”
“No.”
“Your father never knew.”
Ricardo stepped backward.
His mind refused to accept it.
“Then who am I?”
Valeria looked at him.
“You are Ricardo.”
“But whose son?”
Valeria opened her mouth.
Before she could answer—
a voice came from the hallway.
“Mine.”
Ricardo turned.
Gabriel stood there.
Blood covered one side of his shirt.
He was holding a gun.
Ricardo stared at him.
“Where have you been?”
Gabriel ignored the question.
“Valeria, leave.”
She didn't move.
“Leave!”
Valeria stepped back.
Ricardo stared at Gabriel.
“Whose son am I?”
Gabriel looked at him.
For several seconds, his expression softened.
Then he said:
“You are Alejandro's son.”
Ricardo exhaled.
Relief.
Then Gabriel continued.
“But not the way you think.”
Ricardo's eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?”
Gabriel walked toward him.
“When your father was young, he discovered that your grandfather had another family.”
Ricardo listened.
“One of those children was Isabela.”
Gabriel paused.
“The second was me.”
“I know.”
“The third was your mother.”
Ricardo froze.
“My mother?”
Gabriel nodded.
“She was erased from the family.”
Ricardo's voice dropped.
“Why?”
“Because she married a man your grandfather hated.”
“Who?”
Gabriel looked directly at him.
“Your grandfather's enemy.”
Ricardo felt his stomach tighten.
“And that man was?”
Gabriel's eyes filled with sadness.
“Mateo Serrano.”
Ricardo stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“It isn't.”
“Mateo was my father's adviser.”
“He was also your mother's husband.”
Ricardo couldn't speak.
Then a sound came from the hallway.
A child.
“Daddy?”
Ricardo turned.
Diego stood at the end of the corridor.
Barefoot.
Bruised.
Terrified.
Alive.
Ricardo ran toward him.
Diego rushed into his arms.
Ricardo dropped to his knees and held him tightly.
“You're safe.”
Diego's body trembled.
“I tried to wait.”
“I know.”
“I didn't tell them.”
“You did nothing wrong.”
Diego buried his face against his father's chest.
Ricardo looked at Gabriel.
“How did you get him?”
“I didn't.”
Ricardo froze.
“Then who did?”
Gabriel looked toward the doorway.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Pale.
Her dark hair streaked with gray.
Ricardo stared.
He knew her face.
From the photographs.
From the impossible memories.
From the photograph taken three weeks earlier.
Isabela.
Alive.
She looked at Ricardo.
Then at Diego.
And whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
Ricardo stood slowly.
“You're Isabela.”
She nodded.
“You know me.”
“I've known you your entire life.”
Ricardo stared at her.
“Then why did everyone say you were dead?”
Isabela looked toward Gabriel.
“Because I needed them to believe it.”
“Why?”
She took a trembling breath.
“Because your father wasn't the one hiding the truth.”
Ricardo's eyes narrowed.
“Then who was?”
Isabela looked at Diego.
“Mateo.”
Ricardo's expression changed.
“Mateo is my grandfather's enemy?”
“No.”
Isabela shook her head.
“He was never your grandfather's enemy.”
She looked directly into Ricardo's eyes.
“He was his closest ally.”
Ricardo's blood went cold.
“And he is the one who ordered your son taken.”
Diego suddenly grabbed Ricardo's shirt.
His small voice trembled.
“Daddy…”
Ricardo looked down.
“What is it?”
Diego pointed toward Isabela.
Then whispered a name.
A name Ricardo had never heard from his son before.
A name that made Isabela turn completely white.
“Grandpa Mateo.”
The room fell silent.
Ricardo looked at Isabela.
She closed her eyes.
Because she knew exactly what that meant.
May you like
Mateo had been inside Diego's life from the beginning.
And he had been waiting for the boy to say his name.
