Chapter 2 — The Camera Never Lied

Chapter 2 — The Camera Never Lied

Charlotte slept through the night for the first time in weeks.

Not peacefully.

Every hour she whimpered in her dreams.

Twice she reached into the darkness, searching for me.

Both times I was already there.

The next morning, after dropping her at kindergarten, I sat in my car outside the parking lot with my phone in my hands.

The security camera.

I had almost forgotten I still owned the administrator account.

Two Christmases ago, my mother had complained about package thieves.

I had bought her the camera, installed the app, created the cloud account, and added her as a secondary user.

She had never bothered learning the password.

I still knew it.

My hands shook as I logged in.

The camera had been recording continuously whenever motion was detected.

There it was.

Saturday.

10:42 a.m.

Exactly when Charlotte had arrived.

I downloaded every clip before opening the first one.

The living room appeared exactly as I remembered.

Sunlight spilled across the carpet.

Charlotte sat on the floor coloring quietly while Nora played with blocks.

For nearly twenty minutes, nothing happened.

Then Diane walked in.

She glanced toward the camera.

Smiled.

Adjusted a picture frame beneath it.

The movement changed the angle slightly.

Not enough to hide anything.

Just enough, she probably believed, to keep certain conversations out of view.

She underestimated microphones.

I turned the volume higher.

Diane knelt beside Charlotte.

"You know why your mommy works so much?"

Charlotte shrugged.

"So she doesn't have to be with you."

The little girl looked confused.

"No..."

"She loves me."

Diane smiled.

"Oh, sweetheart."

"If she loved you, she'd stay home."

Charlotte lowered her head.

The first crack.

Five minutes later, Nora accidentally stepped on Charlotte's drawing.

Charlotte sighed.

"It's okay."

"We can make another one."

Nora hugged her.

No pushing.

No fighting.

No aggression.

Exactly what I expected.

Then Kendra entered carrying her phone.

She whispered something to Diane.

They both looked toward the children.

Toward the camera.

Toward each other.

My stomach tightened.

Kendra suddenly picked Nora up.

Then—

Without warning—

She gently set Nora back down...

and nudged her shoulder.

Hard enough for the toddler to lose balance.

Nora stumbled backward and landed on the carpet.

She cried immediately.

Charlotte rushed toward her.

"Are you okay?"

Before Charlotte even reached her...

Kendra shouted,

"Charlotte!"

"What did you do?"

Charlotte froze.

"I didn't..."

Diane was already pulling out her phone.

"I'm calling the police."

Charlotte burst into tears.

"I didn't push her!"

Neither woman comforted her.

Instead Diane leaned close enough that only Charlotte could hear.

The microphone still caught every word.

"If you tell your mommy the truth..."

"...she'll stop loving you."

Charlotte stopped crying instantly.

Not because she felt better.

Because she was terrified.

I paused the video.

My vision blurred.

I had spent years believing my mother manipulated me.

I never imagined she would weaponize a child's love for her own mother.

I forced myself to keep watching.

The police arrived.

Before opening the door, Diane whispered,

"Remember."

"Bad girls disappear."

Charlotte folded into herself.

Exactly the posture Officer Ruiz had found.

There it was.

Every lie.

Every threat.

Every second.

Recorded.

I downloaded every file onto three separate hard drives before anyone could delete them.

Then I called the only lawyer I trusted.

"How soon can I see you?"
