Victor hosted a private family dinner at his oceanside mansion.
Only six people attended.
Victor smiled as he raised another crystal glass.
"To family."
Ethan smiled back.

Neither man drank.

Victor leaned closer.
"You gave us quite a scare at the wedding."

Mrs. Evelyn Brooks—the quiet housekeeper everyone ignored—kicked the weapon away before he could touch it.
Years earlier, she had served in military security before becoming the Carter family's housekeeper.
Victor was arrested within seconds.

The yacht explosion that killed Ethan's parents had never been an accident.
Victor had orchestrated everything to seize control of the Carter fortune.
Amelia eventually accepted a plea agreement.
She confessed that Victor had threatened to murder her younger brother unless she obeyed.
Her testimony became the final piece prosecutors needed.
A year later, Victor Langford was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Standing outside the courthouse, Ethan found Mrs. Evelyn waiting quietly.
"You saved my life," he said.
She smiled gently.
"No, sir."
"I simply repaid a promise."
Ethan frowned.
"What promise?"
Mrs. Evelyn opened an old leather wallet.
Inside was a faded photograph.
His parents.
Standing beside a much younger Evelyn.
"Your mother once saved my son's life."
"She asked only one thing in return."
"If anything ever happened to her..."
"...I would protect her little boy."
Tears filled Ethan's eyes.
The woman everyone had dismissed as "just the housekeeper" had kept that promise for nearly thirty years.
