CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF SILENCE

The boutique felt smaller now, as if Lorenzo Rossi’s presence had drained all air from the room.

Brenda Wallace stood rigid, forcing herself to maintain composure even as her authority began to dissolve in real time.

Karen didn’t move. She still had the faint memory of Mia’s small fingers clutching her sleeve, trusting her without question.

Lorenzo adjusted his hold on his daughter gently. Mia rested her head against his shoulder, calmer now, but still watching everything with tired eyes.

“You said she violated policy,” Lorenzo repeated.

Brenda nodded quickly. “She stepped out of her assigned role. She disrupted the customer flow, and she—”

“She helped a child,” Lorenzo interrupted.

A pause.

Then he looked around the store again—at the customers who had once held so much confidence in their privilege, now shrinking under his attention.

“Is that what this place has become?” he asked quietly. “A system where helping a child is an offense?”

No one answered.

Karen finally spoke, her voice careful. “Sir, I didn’t mean to interfere. I just didn’t want her to be alone.”

Mia lifted her head slightly. “She stayed.”

That single sentence landed harder than anything else in the room.

Lorenzo’s gaze returned to Karen, longer this time.
