PART 5 — One Year Later

A year passed.

Santiago celebrated his first birthday surrounded by laughter instead of fear.

His fever was nothing more than a memory.

His first steps happened in our small living room.

Valeria cried as he walked into my arms.

This time...

They were happy tears.

She had regained her strength.

She smiled more.

She laughed again.

The woman I thought I'd lost slowly found her way back.

One evening, after Santiago had fallen asleep, we sat on the balcony watching the lights of Mexico City.

Valeria rested her head on my shoulder.

"I used to think family meant sharing the same blood," she said quietly.

I shook my head.

"Family is the people who protect you."

She smiled.

"And sometimes..."

"You have to lose the family you were born into..."

"...to build the family you deserve."

I slipped the little red bracelet onto Santiago's tiny wrist.

The same bracelet I had bought the day everything fell apart.

I had carried it in my pocket ever since.

Now it finally belonged where it was always meant to be.

As our son laughed in his sleep, I realized something.

The greatest inheritance a parent can leave a child isn't money...

Or a house...

Or a family name.

It's the certainty that, no matter who stands against them...

Someone will always choose to protect them.

And this time—

May you like

I kept my promise.

THE END
