The shattered plate finally caught everyone's attention.
Teresa appeared first, her expression more annoyed than concerned.
"What now?" she snapped. "It's just another excuse to avoid doing housework."
Ethan slowly turned toward his mother.
For the first time in years, she saw something in her son's eyes that made her pause.
Disappointment.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Something colder.
"Emily is in pain," Ethan said quietly.
Teresa folded her arms.
"She's pregnant, not dying."
Ethan looked at each of his sisters.
None of them moved.
None of them apologized.
Instead, Brittany rolled her eyes.
"She's always so dramatic."
Those words became the final straw.
Ethan reached for his phone and dialed emergency services.
Within minutes, paramedics arrived.
After examining Emily, they insisted she be taken to the hospital immediately because of possible premature contractions.
As the stretcher rolled toward the elevator, Ethan climbed into the ambulance beside his wife without saying another word to his family.
The apartment fell silent.
No one realized that everything they depended on was about to disappear.
The doctor met Ethan outside the examination room nearly an hour later.
"Your wife and baby are stable," she said.
Relief nearly brought him to his knees.
"But stress has been affecting her blood pressure for weeks. She needs complete rest. No heavy lifting. No emotional distress."
Weeks.
The word echoed in his head.
Emily had been suffering while he believed overtime was protecting everyone.
Instead, it had left her alone.
That night, sitting beside her hospital bed, Ethan made a promise.
"No one will ever treat you like that again."
Emily squeezed his hand.
"I never wanted you to choose between me and your family."
He smiled sadly.
"I already chose."
