Epilogue — Five Years Later

Laughter filled the gardens of the Salazar Foundation.

Children raced between the trees while parents watched from nearby benches.

Five-year-old Mateo ran toward his mother carrying a handmade drawing.

"I made this for you!"

Valeria knelt and hugged him tightly.

"What is it?"

"Our family."

She unfolded the paper.

There were only three people in the picture.

A little boy.

His mother.

His grandfather.

No shadows.

No fear.

Only smiles.

Across the lawn, Ricardo watched them together.

Everything he had built in business suddenly seemed insignificant compared to this single peaceful afternoon.

Valeria walked over and slipped her arm through his.

"You know," she said softly, "I used to think losing everything would destroy me."

Ricardo smiled.

"But you didn't lose everything."

"No."

She looked at Mateo chasing butterflies beneath the summer sun.

"I lost the people who never truly loved me."

She paused.

"And that made room for the ones who always did."

The wind carried her son's laughter across the garden.

It sounded like freedom.
