CHAPTER 2 — The Man Santiago Should Never Have Crossed

CHAPTER 2 — The Man Santiago Should Never Have Crossed
The silence lasted only a few seconds.
But for Santiago, it felt like an eternity.
He stared at the man standing in the doorway, trying to place the face.
The tailored black overcoat.
The silver hair.
The quiet confidence that filled the room without a single raised voice.
Beatriz lowered her wine glass.
"Can we help you?" she asked sharply.
The stranger ignored her.
His eyes searched the room until they found me.
The moment he saw the bruise spreading across my cheek and the way I held my belly, his expression hardened.
"My daughter," he said quietly.
"I'm sorry I didn't come sooner."
The room froze.
Santiago frowned.
"Daughter?"
I felt tears sting my eyes for the first time in weeks.
"Dad..."
He crossed the foyer in three long strides.
Without asking permission, he wrapped his coat around my shoulders.
His hands trembled—not from fear, but from barely controlled rage.
"Did he do this?"
I nodded once.
That was enough.
Ricardo Salazar slowly turned toward Santiago.
"So..."
"You're Santiago Rivas."
Santiago forced a laugh.
"I think you've mistaken—"
"I never make mistakes."
One of the attorneys stepped forward and handed Ricardo a tablet.
He glanced at the screen.
"At exactly 8:42 p.m., every threat you made was recorded."
The attorney looked directly at Santiago.
"The recording has already been duplicated and sent to the authorities, family court, and multiple secure servers."
Santiago's smile disappeared.
"You recorded me?"
Ricardo answered instead.
"No."
"My daughter did."
"For weeks."
Beatriz finally stepped forward.
"This is illegal!"
"No," another attorney replied calmly.
"What is illegal is assaulting a pregnant woman."
"And conspiring to falsify psychiatric records."
Beatriz's face turned pale.
Santiago clenched his fists.
"You have no proof."
Ricardo looked at the second attorney.
"Show him."
The attorney opened another folder.
Photographs.
Medical reports.
Copies of forged psychiatric evaluations.
Bank transfers.
Emails between Santiago and a private clinic.
Every page made Santiago's face lose more color.
Then Ricardo delivered the final blow.
"And before entering this house..."
"I acquired the remaining debt owed by Rivas Holdings."
Santiago blinked.
"...What?"
"The banks sold your loans this morning."
"I bought every one of them."
He placed the documents onto the marble table.
"As of today..."
"I legally control every debt your company owes."
"You are bankrupt."
The room fell silent again.
"No..."
Santiago whispered.
"That's impossible."
Ricardo looked him straight in the eyes.
"The impossible was believing my daughter had no family."
At that exact moment, police sirens echoed outside.
Blue and red lights flashed across the mansion walls.
One officer entered with a warrant.
"Santiago Rivas."
"You are under arrest on suspicion of domestic violence, conspiracy, fraud, and coercive control."
Santiago spun toward me.
"You planned this?"
I met his eyes.
"No."
"You planned this yourself."
The handcuffs clicked shut.
