CHAPTER 1 — THE HOUSE OF SILENCE

The room smelled of bleach.

Too much bleach.

The kind people used when they were trying to erase something.

Ethan dropped his duffel bag without taking his eyes off his wife.

Claire didn't flinch.

She simply folded her arms tighter across her chest, as if he were the one interrupting her day.

"You came home early," she said.

Not Thank God you're safe.

Not I missed you.

Just four cold words.

His mother reached for him with shaking fingers.

"Ethan..."

He was on his knees beside her in an instant.

Fresh bruises darkened the inside of her wrists. One cheek was swollen. Her cardigan sleeve couldn't hide the yellowing fingerprints around her arm.

His military training screamed at him to stay calm.

His son's instincts screamed something else.

"Who did this?"

His mother looked at Claire.

Then lowered her eyes.

That silence answered everything.

Claire laughed softly.

"She's old, Ethan. She falls all the time."

He looked around the living room.

The television was unplugged.

The curtains were nailed shut.

His mother's walker had one wheel missing.

Prescription bottles sat on the shelf with every label peeled away.

None of it was accidental.

His heartbeat slowed.

Not from relief.

From control.

The same control that had kept him alive through firefights overseas.

He lifted his mother carefully into the recliner.

Then he noticed something else.

The landline phone had no cord.

His mother's cell phone wasn't anywhere in sight.

Claire saw where he was looking.

"She gets confused," she said smoothly. "She kept calling you and upsetting herself."

Ethan stared at her.

"I never got a single call."

May you like

For the first time...

Claire's smile faded.
