Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO CAME BACK

Claire refused to believe Leonard had killed Aaron.

She studied the security video until Agent Monroe took the tablet away.

“My husband is not a murderer.”

“He may have been trying to recover evidence,” Monroe said.

“He entered that office.”

“That does not prove he caused Aaron’s death.”

“Then where is he?”

Claire had no answer.

A federal alert went out.

Leonard Blake was considered a person of interest, not yet a suspect.

His photograph appeared across the country.

At noon, he walked into the lobby of the hospital.

He wore a maintenance uniform and pushed an empty laundry cart.

Security officers recognized him only after he reached the maternity floor.

Alarms sounded.

My door locked automatically.

My father stood between my bed and the hallway.

Agent Monroe drew her weapon outside.

“Leonard Blake!”

“Show me your hands!”

Through the narrow window, I saw Leonard slowly lift both arms.

He looked thinner than in the photographs.

A healing cut marked his temple.

“I’m not armed,” he said.

“Get on the floor.”

“I came to speak to Anna.”

“You’re under arrest.”

“I have something she needs.”

Agents forced him to his knees.

The laundry cart tipped onto its side.

A black ledger slid across the floor.

Leonard was searched, handcuffed, and taken into custody.

The ledger contained names that did not appear in either of the others.

These were not recipients of bribes.

They were victims.

Witnesses threatened into silence.

Attorneys framed for crimes.

Families monitored.

Judges blackmailed.

My name occupied an entire page.

The entries began one month before my wedding.

David had documented each stage of my isolation.

FATHER CONFLICT ESTABLISHED.

EMPLOYMENT TERMINATED.

VEHICLE ACCESS REMOVED.

FINANCIAL DEPENDENCE COMPLETE.

PREGNANCY ACHIEVED.

The final line had been added recently.

TRANSFER SCHEDULED — CHRISTMAS NIGHT.

My pregnancy had not been an accident.

David had sabotaged my birth control.

The realization left me physically cold.

My son was loved.

He was innocent.

But his conception had been part of a plan.

I turned away from the ledger.

“Get it out of here.”

Agent Monroe closed the book.

Leonard requested a formal interview.

He agreed to speak only if Claire attended.

Prosecutors refused at first.

Then Leonard offered the location of Dr. Vale and documents proving Sylvia’s control of the network.

The interview took place inside a secure federal facility and was transmitted to my hospital room.

Claire sat across from Leonard.

For several seconds, they only looked at each other.

“You let me bury you,” she said.

“I know.”

“I stood beside an empty grave.”

“I know.”

“Our grandchildren believe you’re dead.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“If Sylvia knew I was alive, she would have used them.”

“You were working with her.”

“I was pretending.”

“You walked beside Aaron.”

“He helped me escape.”

“Then why is he dead?”

Leonard lowered his head.

“Because he trusted David.”

The room became silent.

Leonard explained that Aaron’s disbarment had been real.

David framed him after he discovered suspicious payments.

Sylvia later approached Aaron and promised to restore his career if he helped manage the Legacy accounts.

Aaron agreed.

Then he began secretly copying records.

Leonard contacted him while working as an informant.

Together, they created the second and third ledgers.

“Why stage your death?” Claire asked.

“David found my communications with the Justice Department.”

“I had two choices.”

“Disappear.”

“Or lead him to everyone helping me.”

“Why not enter witness protection?”

“Someone inside the investigation was leaking information.”

Agent Monroe stiffened.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“How did you end up in the room from the video?”

“Sylvia found me.”

“She held you?”

“For four months.”

“How did you escape?”

“Aaron moved me during Christmas because he knew David planned to take Anna to the storage facility.”

Leonard looked toward the camera.

“He believed moving me would create enough confusion for Anna to survive.”

“Did you kill Aaron?” Reyes asked.

“No.”

“Who did?”

“Dr. Vale.”

“Where is he?”

“On a private estate near Chesapeake Bay.”

“Owned by whom?”

Leonard hesitated.

“Judge Halpern.”

The federal team moved immediately.

Before they ended the interview, Claire asked one final question.

“Why did you come to the hospital?”

Leonard looked into the camera again.

“Because the leak is here.”

My father stepped toward the screen.

“What do you mean?”

“Someone has been feeding Sylvia information about Anna’s medical condition.”

“Someone knew the baby survived.”

“Someone knew her room number.”

“Someone knew I would come.”

Agent Monroe ordered the hospital floor sealed.

Staff members were questioned.

Electronic access logs were examined.

Only six people had entered my medical record.

Dr. Ramirez.

Two nurses.

A hospital administrator.

A federal medical liaison.

And my father’s longtime chief of staff, Henry Wallace.

Henry had worked for my father for nineteen years.

He attended my mother’s funeral.

He gave a speech at my wedding.

He had visited the hospital twice.

When agents searched his office, Henry was gone.

On his desk, they found a photograph of me as a child.

A note had been written across the back.

SHE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE CHRISTMAS.
