CHAPTER 15: They Came for My Wife and Son

The photograph shook in my hands.
Amy stood outside Frederick's daycare, smiling faintly as she adjusted our son's tiny backpack.
She had no idea someone was watching her.
No idea someone had followed her.
No idea she had become the next target.
Beneath the photograph, only one sentence appeared.
Stop digging... or your family disappears next.
For a split second...
I couldn't breathe.
Detective Harris reacted before anyone else.
"Dispatch, this is Detective Samuel Harris."
His voice remained calm, but every officer in the lobby recognized the urgency.
"Priority One."
"Immediate protective custody for Amy Bradley and Frederick Bradley."
"Notify Metro Patrol."
"Notify Highway Patrol."
"I want every route leading away from that daycare covered."
The dispatcher answered almost instantly.
"Units are en route."
I was already running.
"Connor!"
Harris grabbed my shoulder.
"Wait."
"I don't have time!"
"You do if you want your family alive."
His words stopped me.
He pointed toward an unmarked SUV.
"Ride with us."
"If this is coordinated..."
"You driving alone makes you an easy target."
He was right.
I hated that he was right.
The sirens screamed through downtown Nashville.
Traffic parted as police vehicles sped toward Frederick's daycare.
Every minute felt like an hour.
I called Amy.
No answer.
Again.
Straight to voicemail.
Again.
Nothing.
My hands shook so violently I almost dropped the phone.
Ten minutes later...
A patrol officer radioed in.
"Dispatch."
"This is Unit Twenty-Seven."
"We've arrived."
Silence.
Then...
"Something's wrong."
The convoy reached the daycare less than three minutes later.
Police cars surrounded the building.
Parents stood outside crying.
Teachers huddled together.
Children were being loaded onto school buses under police supervision.
I jumped out before the SUV had fully stopped.
"Amy!"
No answer.
"Frederick!"
Nothing.
A female officer intercepted me.
"Mr. Bradley!"
"Where's my wife?"
She hesitated.
"They're gone."
My knees nearly gave way.
"Gone?"
"The daycare was evacuated after someone pulled the fire alarm."
"When everyone ran outside..."
She lowered her eyes.
"...your wife and son disappeared."
The world seemed to stop.
No sound.
No movement.
Only one thought.
I was too late.
Detective Harris immediately established a command post.
"Witnesses."
"Security footage."
"Lock down every nearby intersection."
Within minutes, detectives were interviewing teachers.
Parents.
Delivery drivers.
Anyone who had been within a block of the daycare.
A young teacher approached us, still trembling.
"I saw something."
Harris turned toward her.
"What?"
"There was a woman."
"What did she look like?"
"Blonde."
"About fifty."
"Wearing sunglasses."
My heart sank.
"My mother."
The teacher nodded uncertainly.
"She told your wife..."
She struggled to remember.
"...that you had been injured."
"She said there'd been a construction accident."
Amy.
Terrified.
She would have believed it.
Another officer hurried over carrying a tablet.
"We recovered part of the surveillance footage."
The video played.
Amy rushed out carrying Frederick.
Confused parents surrounded her.
Then...
A silver SUV stopped beside the curb.
The passenger window lowered.
The driver couldn't be seen clearly.
Amy leaned down to listen.
Her face changed instantly.
Panic.
She hugged Frederick tightly.
Then climbed into the SUV.
The vehicle drove away.
Twenty-three seconds later...
The fire alarm sounded.
I stared at the screen.
"No."
Amy hadn't been kidnapped.
She had gone willingly.
Because she believed I needed her.
Detective Harris nodded.
"Someone exploited her trust."
Just then...
Another detective shouted.
"We've got a plate!"
Traffic cameras had captured the SUV less than two miles away.
The license plate was fake.
But the vehicle itself...
Was registered to a rental company.
The rental agreement had been signed that morning.
Under a false identity.
Paid entirely in cash.
Professional.
Planned.
Hours passed.
No ransom call.
No demands.
Nothing.
The silence was unbearable.
Then...
At exactly 6:17 p.m...
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered immediately.
"Amy?"
Only breathing.
Then...
My mother's voice.
Soft.
Almost affectionate.
"Hello, Connor."
Every muscle in my body tightened.
"What have you done?"
She laughed quietly.
"You always assume the worst."
"Where's my wife?"
"Safe."
"Where's my son?"
"Safer than he'll ever be with you."
I nearly shouted.
"If you touch either of them—"
She interrupted me.
"I haven't."
"But others might."
The room fell silent.
Others?
There were still people working with her.
"What do you want?"
She sighed.
"The safety deposit box."
"The journal."
"The recordings."
"Bring everything."
"And come alone."
Detective Harris immediately began tracing the call.
I kept talking.
"Where?"
"You'll receive the location."
The line remained quiet for several seconds.
Then my mother whispered something unexpected.
"They've betrayed me too."
I frowned.
"What?"
"You think I'm the mastermind."
A bitter laugh escaped her.
"I was only useful until I became a liability."
The confidence I had heard in her voice for years...
Was gone.
For the first time...
She sounded afraid.
The call ended.
The trace completed seconds later.
Detective Harris looked at the map.
"She bounced the signal through multiple prepaid devices."
He frowned.
"But..."
"What?"
"There was one mistake."
"She stayed connected four seconds too long."
He zoomed in.
"The final signal came from..."
He stopped speaking.
I stared at the screen.
The location marker rested on a place I knew better than anywhere else.
My childhood home.
The farmhouse where I had grown up.
The house my mother claimed she had sold years ago.
Detective Harris looked directly at me.
"I don't think she ever sold it."
He paused.
"I think she's been hiding there all along."
As tactical officers began preparing for the operation, none of us realized one terrifying truth.
May you like
We weren't walking into a rescue.
We were walking into a trap that had been waiting for us for twelve years.
