Chapter 3: The Truth That Had Been Hidden for Years

Two weeks passed.

The dress was packed away.

The flowers had long since died.

The gossip had not.

Everywhere I went, people whispered.

Poor Amy.

Can you imagine?

How could they do that?

I tried to move forward.

Until one rainy Tuesday.

A woman I had never met walked into my office.

She introduced herself quietly.

"My name is Claire."

She looked exhausted.

"I need to tell you something about Maverick."

I almost asked her to leave.

Instead...

I listened.

Claire placed a folder on my desk.

Inside were photographs.

Bank statements.

Messages.

Hotel receipts.

My stomach tightened.

"This can't be..."

She nodded.

"It started three years ago."

Three years.

I had been engaged for two.

Meaning...

He had already been cheating before he proposed.

But the worst part wasn't Penelope.

There had been others.

Claire.

A coworker.

A fitness instructor.

Even a woman from another city.

Different names.

Different hotels.

Same lies.

"He always promised marriage."

Claire looked ashamed.

"When I learned he was engaged..."

"I ended everything."

"But I never knew there were so many."

She pushed one final document toward me.

A spreadsheet.

Dates.

Payments.

Expensive gifts.

Every affair carefully hidden behind business trips.

My hands shook.

Not because I still loved him.

Because I finally realized...

I had never known him.

Claire stood.

"I'm sorry."

"I thought you deserved the truth."

Before leaving, she paused.

"One more thing."

"Penelope wasn't the first bridesmaid."

"What?"

"Two years ago..."

"He cheated on another fiancée."

"He convinced everyone she was unstable."

"He destroyed her reputation."

Then he found me.

When she left...

I couldn't breathe.

Aunt Rose arrived an hour later.

She read every page.

Then she smiled sadly.

"I wondered."

"You wondered?"

"He lies too comfortably."

She folded the papers neatly.

"My dear..."

"You didn't lose the love of your life."

"You escaped the performance of one."

That sentence stayed with me.

Escaped.

Not abandoned.

Escaped.

For the first time...

I believed it.

Three months later...

The courthouse buzzed with quiet conversations.

Maverick stood before a judge.

Not because of me.

Because four different women had filed fraud complaints.

Promises.

Money.

False investments.

Identity deception.

The investigation uncovered years of manipulation.

He hadn't simply broken hearts.

He had stolen futures.

Penelope sat alone in the back row.

No one sat beside her.

She had lost nearly every friend.

Not because she loved the wrong man.

Because she knowingly betrayed the right people.

When court ended...

She approached me outside.

"I know you hate me."

I looked at her.

"I don't."

She blinked.

"I don't have enough room in my life for hate anymore."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

"I know."

"You'll never forgive me?"

I thought carefully.

Then answered honestly.

"Forgiveness isn't something you ask for."

"It's something I choose for myself."

"So yes..."

"I forgive you."

"But forgiveness doesn't reopen closed doors."

She cried harder.

May you like

I walked away.

Lighter than I'd felt in years.
