Chapter 1: The Safe Deposit Box

Olivia didn't remember the drive home.

Only the silence.

Her five-year-old son, Mason, slept peacefully in his car seat, clutching the stuffed dinosaur his father had bought him just two weeks earlier.

Every red light felt unreal.

Every breath felt borrowed.

When she reached home, she carried Mason upstairs without waking him.

She tucked him into bed.

Kissed his forehead.

Closed the bedroom door.

Only then did she allow herself to fall apart.

She collapsed onto the kitchen floor, her body shaking with silent sobs.

Her phone vibrated.

Daniel Calling.

She declined it.

Again.

Again.

Then Claire.

Then their mother.

Then twenty-three text messages.

"Please let me explain."

"It only happened once."

"You misunderstood."

Olivia deleted every message without reading the rest.

At 11:47 p.m., the doorbell rang.

She ignored it.

Five minutes later, someone slipped an envelope beneath the front door.

She waited until the knocking stopped before picking it up.

Inside was a single key.

A brass key.

Attached to it was a handwritten note in Daniel's handwriting.

Box 218. First National Trust Bank.
I never wanted you to find out like this.
The truth is bigger than the affair.

Olivia stared at the note.

Bigger than the affair?

The next morning, she drove to the bank.

The manager asked for identification before escorting her into the vault.

Inside Safe Deposit Box 218 sat a black folder.

Nothing else.

She opened it.

The first document nearly stopped her heart.

Life Insurance Policy.

Policy Holder: Olivia Harper.

Beneficiary:

Daniel Harper.

Coverage Amount:

$5,000,000.

Issued...

Three months earlier.

She frowned.

She had never signed any insurance paperwork.

Then she turned the page.

Her signature was there.

Perfect.

Except...

It wasn't hers.

Someone had forged it.

Her hands began to tremble.

The second document was even worse.

Medical records.

Her own name.

A diagnosis she had never received.

Terminal Brain Tumor.

She stared in disbelief.

Every report was fake.

Every doctor's signature forged.

Someone had created an entire medical history claiming she had less than six months to live.

The final item inside the folder was a USB drive.
