Chapter 11 - Vanessa’s Offer

Daniel Price surrendered at a gas station outside Helena.

Fear made him cooperative.

He had accepted two hundred thousand dollars from Victor Vale over eighteen months in exchange for case intelligence.

He claimed he never knew about the plan to kill me.

I believed he was lying about some things.

So did the prosecutors.

But he gave investigators something valuable.

A location.

Victor had rented a remote property near Glacier County through a shell corporation.

Grant and Vanessa had used it for forty-eight hours.

By the time agents arrived, the house was empty.

One coffee cup was still warm.

They had missed them by less than an hour.

Then Vanessa called.

Not me.

Marcus.

“I want immunity.”

Marcus put the call on speaker in a secured room.

I was not supposed to participate.

I sat behind the observation glass anyway.

Vanessa’s voice sounded different.

No champagne arrogance.

No polished cruelty.

Fear.

“Victor is going to kill me.”

Marcus remained calm.

“Why?”

“Because Grant lost everything.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

“Grant had copies of the account keys.”

“Had?”

“Victor took them.”

“Where is Grant?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where are you?”

“If I tell you, I want immunity.”

“That isn’t how this works.”

“I can give you Victor.”

“Then start.”

Silence.

Marcus waited.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“My brother didn’t trust Grant.”

“Smartest thing he did.”

“Victor always planned to cut him out.”

“Where?”

“There’s a transfer tonight.”

“Where?”

“I want a deal.”

Marcus leaned back.

“Ms. Vale, you are a suspect in a federal conspiracy and separately under investigation for abusing a five-year-old child.”

Silence.

“You are in no position to dictate.”

“She was difficult.”

My hands clenched.

Marcus’s eyes changed.

“Do not explain that to me.”

Vanessa went quiet.

“Tell us where you are.”

“I didn’t mean to hurt her.”

There it was.

Not remorse.

Repositioning.

“She kept asking for Evelyn.”

Marcus said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“Every day.”

Her voice sharpened.

“Evelyn this. Mommy that. When is Mommy coming home? Mommy promised.”

My stomach turned.

“She looked at me like I was nobody.”

Marcus’s voice became cold.

“She was correct.”

Vanessa inhaled sharply.

Then something inside her broke.

“Fine.”

She gave an address.

Agents moved.

Vanessa was hiding in a roadside motel near Browning, Montana.

She walked out with both hands visible.

No makeup.

No red heels.

No robe.

Just jeans and a coat borrowed from someone else.

She looked smaller in custody.

That did not make her less dangerous.

During interrogation, Vanessa blamed Victor.

Then Grant.

Then childhood trauma.

Then alcohol.

Then stress.

Investigators listened.

Eventually, she understood excuses were not currency.

Information was.

So she started talking.

Victor planned to cross the border using a freight convoy.

He had bribed two drivers.

Grant was not part of the plan anymore.

“Why?” Marcus asked.

Vanessa stared at the table.

“Because Grant wants Lily.”

“For what reason?”

“He thinks having her gives him leverage over Evelyn.”

My blood ran cold.

“Explain.”

“Grant believes Evelyn will trade anything for that child.”

Marcus remained expressionless.

“What does he want traded?”

“The original evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“Anything tying him to the attempted hit.”

“Those records are already duplicated.”

“He doesn’t understand that.”

Vanessa looked almost contemptuous.

“Grant thinks like a businessman. He always thinks there’s one original contract somewhere that can be destroyed.”

“Where is he now?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who is helping him?”

She hesitated.

“Vanessa.”

“There’s a man.”

“Name.”

“Peter Lang.”

I knew it.

Grant’s head of corporate security.

Former police officer.

Retired early.

He had eaten Thanksgiving dinner at our house.

He gave Lily a bicycle when she turned four.

“Where does Lang live?” Marcus asked.

“Denver.”

My stomach dropped.

Grant had returned.

While law enforcement focused north, he had gone home.

Toward Lily.

Toward me.

Marcus left the interview room and came directly to the observation area.

“We’re moving you again.”

“No.”

“This isn’t optional.”

“Grant expects that.”

“What?”

“He knows your protocol now.”

“So?”

“He knows you’ll move us after any confirmed threat.”

Marcus watched me.

“What are you suggesting?”

“I’m suggesting he’s trying to make us predictable.”

“Your alternative?”

“Stop moving Lily like luggage.”

“That isn’t fair.”

“I know.”

I rubbed my forehead.

“I’m scared.”

Marcus softened slightly.

“Good.”

I glared at him.

“Fear keeps people careful.”

“I’ve been careful for eight weeks.”

“You were careful with criminals.”

He nodded toward the interrogation room.

“This is different.”

He was right.

Criminals wanted money.

Power.

Freedom.

Grant wanted control.

Control was more personal.

And personal men took irrational risks.

That afternoon, federal agents arrested Peter Lang.

He resisted nothing.

He denied everything.

Then they searched his garage.

Inside a locked cabinet, they found floor plans.

Not for our house.

For Lily’s elementary school.

My breathing stopped when Marcus showed me.

“Grant knows she isn’t there,” I said.

“We think the plans are older.”

“How old?”

“File date is three weeks ago.”

Before I came home.

Grant had been planning something involving Lily long before he became a fugitive.

Then investigators found a second plan.

The Children’s Museum.

A park.

Her pediatrician.

Four places I regularly took Lily.

Grant had mapped our routine.

For what?

Marcus’s phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His face went pale.

“What?”

He ended the call.

Then looked at me.

“Lang’s lawyer wants to negotiate.”

“About?”

“Grant’s plan.”

“What plan?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Grant never expected you to survive the operation.”

I stared.

“We know that.”

“No.”

Marcus shook his head.

“That was only phase one.”

“What was phase two?”

He looked through the glass at Vanessa.

May you like

Then back at me.

“After your death, Grant planned to make Lily disappear too.”
