Chapter 8 - The Man in the Photograph

The bank doors locked automatically.
Security guards rushed toward the vault.
For ten seconds, I believed Victoria had found us.
Then smoke began seeping through the ventilation system.
Not fire.
Smoke.
A diversion.
Nathan grabbed the box.
A guard shouted:
“Leave everything!”
“No.”
Nathan pulled the letter and tape into his jacket.
We left the metal box behind.
Outside, three police vehicles arrived.
There was no fire.
Someone had activated a smoke device in a restroom.
Security footage showed a maintenance worker entering twenty minutes earlier.
Fake badge.
Cap pulled low.
Gone before alarms sounded.
The message was clear.
Victoria knew.
We played the cassette at Rebecca’s office.
My father’s voice.
Caleb Morgan’s voice.
And a third person.
Christopher.
The recording was seven years old.
Caleb sounded tired.
Daniel cannot know yet.
Christopher responded.
He deserves to know.
Knowing will destroy him.
Not knowing is already destroying everyone else.
Then my father spoke.
Victoria built the Hale inheritance around a lie. If Richard’s original trust becomes public and Daniel’s paternity is challenged, she loses control of everything.
Caleb:
She will hurt Rachel.
Christopher:
Then we move first.
My father:
No. We protect the children.
Children.
Plural.
At that time Emma had not been born.
Ava was a baby.
Who was the other child?
The tape continued.
Christopher:
What about Daniel?
My father:
Daniel is not a child anymore. At some point he has to choose who he is.
Caleb said:
He’ll choose his mother.
There was a long pause.
Then Christopher said:
Then God help whoever marries him.
I turned off the recording.
No one spoke.
Daniel arrived an hour later.
I played it for him.
He did not cry.
He became very still.
“My father isn’t my father.”
“No.”
“Caleb?”
“Yes.”
He walked to the window.
I expected rage.
Instead, he laughed once.
“My mother hated him.”
“You knew Caleb?”
“He came to every birthday until I was twelve.”
I remembered photographs.
A tall older man standing behind Daniel at family events.
Always present.
Never explained.
Daniel looked at me.
“She used him in the fake affair photographs.”
“Yes.”
“Because she knew what seeing him beside you would do to me.”
“You didn’t recognize him?”
“The pictures were distant.”
He rubbed his face.
“She told me he had been obsessed with you.”
The manipulation was almost elegant.
Victoria had turned biological truth into marital poison.
Daniel looked suddenly older.
“Why did Caleb never tell me?”
“Fear.”
“Of her?”
“Yes.”
He laughed bitterly.
“Everyone was afraid of her.”
Then he looked toward me.
“Except you.”
“That isn’t true.”
“What?”
“I’m terrified of her.”
He stared.
“I’m just more afraid of what happens if nobody stops her.”
That night, police found Arthur Bell.
Dead.
Inside his car.
Carbon monoxide poisoning.
Initially it looked like suicide.
Then investigators found his phone.
One deleted voicemail had been recovered.
Victoria’s voice.
Arthur, if you cannot fix what you started, I will fix it for you.
Now there was a body connected directly to her.
A warrant was issued.
Still, she vanished.
Then Ava spoke.
She had barely said anything since being recovered.
Leah sat beside her during a forensic interview.
When asked where Victoria had taken her before the airport, Ava whispered:
“Grandma’s quiet house.”
“Where is that?”
Ava shrugged.
“What did it look like?”
“White.”
“Anything outside?”
“Water.”
“Lake?”
“No.”
“River?”
She shook her head.
“Big water.”
Ocean.
The Hale family owned property along the Rhode Island coast.
Daniel listed four houses.
Police searched them.
Nothing.
Then Ava drew a picture.
White house.
Blue water.
A black lighthouse.
Daniel stared at it.
“I know that place.”
“Where?”
He looked at me.
“My mother doesn’t own it.”
“Who does?”
He swallowed.
“Caleb Morgan.”
My pulse jumped.
Caleb had died the year before.
Or so we thought.
Police checked.
There was a death certificate.
Cremation certificate.
Probate filing.
Signed by Victoria’s attorney.
No independent family witness.
No public funeral.
No obituary beyond a private notice.
Detective Torres looked at Daniel.
“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”
May you like
Daniel stared at Ava’s drawing.
“My father may still be alive.”
