Chapter 11 - MY FATHER WAS ARRESTED BEFORE BREAKFAST

Federal agents arrived at Harrison Vale’s house at 6:12 a.m.

The news helicopters were overhead by seven.

I watched from my kitchen.

My father walked out between two agents wearing a navy coat over his pajamas.

Even then, his posture was perfect.

He looked irritated.

Not frightened.

The television anchor listed allegations.

Wire fraud.

Bank fraud.

Misappropriation of restricted funds.

Conspiracy.

Identity theft.

Obstruction.

My father’s lawyer released a statement calling the investigation “a family dispute distorted by disgruntled employees.”

Family dispute.

Of course.

Everything became family when he needed outsiders to stop looking closely.

Margaret pleaded guilty.

Vanessa entered a non-prosecution agreement for some conduct in exchange for extensive cooperation.

I entered my plea three weeks later.

The courtroom was full.

Reporters.

Former employees.

Investors.

People who had lost money.

Claire sat in the back beside Rachel.

I didn’t know she would come.

When the judge asked how I pleaded, I said,

“Guilty.”

The word echoed differently than I expected.

No thunder.

No collapse.

Just a fact finally spoken aloud.

Afterward, Claire waited outside the courtroom.

I approached.

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I wanted to hear you say it.”

“That sounds brutal.”

“It isn't.”

“What is it?”

“Closure.”

I nodded.

“Did it help?”

“A little.”

Then Noah started fussing in his stroller.

He was almost seven months old now.

He had my eyes.

Claire’s mouth.

He reached toward me.

No hesitation.

That nearly broke me.

“Can I?”

Claire nodded.

I picked him up.

He grabbed my nose.

For thirty seconds, the courthouse disappeared.

Then Vanessa walked out.

Claire saw her.

I felt my body tense.

Vanessa stopped.

She looked at Claire.

Then at me.

“Claire.”

Claire said nothing.

Vanessa swallowed.

“I owe you an apology.”

“You do.”

“I don’t expect—”

“Good.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I knew he was married.”

Claire’s expression remained steady.

“I knew you had just had Noah.”

“I knew enough to walk away.”

“I didn't.”

“No.”

“You didn't.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I'm sorry.”

Claire looked at her for several seconds.

Then said,

“I believe you are.”

Nothing more.

No forgiveness.

No dramatic confrontation.

Vanessa left.

I watched her walk down the courthouse steps.

Six months earlier I thought she was the woman I wanted.

Now she felt like someone from a version of my life I barely recognized.

Claire took Noah back.

“Harrison’s trial is in October.”

“I know.”

“Will you testify?”

“Yes.”

“Against your father.”

“Yes.”

She searched my face.

“Are you scared?”

“Terrified.”

“Good.”

I almost laughed.

“Good?”

“Fear means you finally understand there are consequences.”

I nodded.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“I loved you.”

Her eyes changed.

Past tense.

Maybe she heard it too.

“I know.”

“I did.”

“I know.”

“I just loved myself more.”

For the first time, Claire looked close to tears.

“That’s probably the truest thing you've ever said to me.”

Then she walked away.

May you like

I didn't chase her.

That was new too.
