Chapter 2: Everything Falls Apart

Within twenty minutes, police officers filled the rehabilitation center.
The forged documents were photographed.
The medication was collected as evidence.
Every surveillance camera in the hallway was secured before anyone could erase the recordings.
One detective questioned the staff separately.
The stories didn't match.
A nurse admitted Margaret frequently instructed employees to keep Ava "calm."
Another confessed that visiting hours had been manipulated whenever Daniel announced he was coming.
Then came the biggest surprise.
The facility's financial director quietly handed investigators several invoices.
Margaret had personally paid extra for "special supervision."
Those instructions included:
"No private phone access."
"Visitors require family approval."
"Patient should remain compliant."
Daniel could barely breathe as he read them.
His own mother had isolated his wife.
Not to help her recover—
but to control her.
By evening, Adult Protective Services had opened an investigation.
The attorney who drafted the power of attorney immediately withdrew from representing Margaret after seeing the altered documents.
He insisted he had never authorized any forged signatures.
Margaret suddenly found herself sitting alone in an interview room.
No family.
No lawyers.
No excuses.
Meanwhile, Daniel helped Ava settle into a different medical facility selected entirely by her.
For the first time in weeks...
She slept without being sedated.
When she woke the next morning, Daniel was sitting beside her bed.
"I failed you."
Ava shook her head.
"They lied to both of us."
He gently held her hand.
May you like
"Never again."
She believed him.
