CHAPTER 3: THE CHRISTMAS THEY BUILT FOR THEMSELVES

Snow drifted softly across the windshield as Michael drove through the quiet streets.

Neither of them spoke for several minutes.

Finally Lily whispered,

"Are you mad at me?"

Michael nearly slammed on the brakes.

He pulled into a quiet parking lot beneath rows of glowing Christmas lights.

Turning toward his daughter, he gently held her hands.

"Lily..."

"I will never be angry because someone else treated you unfairly."

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I thought maybe if I worked harder..."

"You never have to earn your place in my family."

She broke down crying.

For the first time that night, Michael cried too.

An hour later they found a small neighborhood diner that was still open.

The waitress noticed Lily's red eyes.

She quietly brought her an extra slice of chocolate cake with colorful sprinkles.

"Merry Christmas," she smiled.

Lily smiled back.

It was the first genuine smile Michael had seen all day.

After dinner they drove to a public park filled with lights.

No photographers.

No expensive decorations.

No perfect family image.

Just a father and his daughter making snow angels beneath the stars.

Michael took one selfie.

Lily laughed so hard her cheeks turned bright pink.

He looked at the photo.

May you like

"This," he said,

"is my favorite family picture."
