Chapter 1 – The Case Harrison Cole Never Intended to Lose

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

Sirens screamed through downtown Norristown as Harrison Cole sat beside his unconscious sister, one blood-soaked hand wrapped around hers while the other pressed against the growing stain on her abdomen.

"Stay with me," he whispered.

"You promised you'd teach my daughter how to fish someday."

No response.

The heart monitor beeped frantically.

Across from him, a paramedic looked up from the ultrasound monitor.

"There’s no fetal heartbeat."

The words shattered the air.

Then—

"Wait."

Another paramedic leaned closer.

"There."

A tiny flutter.

Weak.

Almost invisible.

"But it's there."

Harrison closed his eyes.

For the first time in years, he prayed.

Three hours later...

The operating room doors finally opened.

Dr. Melissa Grant removed her surgical cap with exhausted hands.

"We saved your sister."

Harrison released a breath he hadn't realized he had been holding.

"And the baby?"

The doctor hesitated.

"Your niece is alive."

"But..."

"The lack of oxygen caused complications."

"We won't know the full extent until she's older."

Harrison nodded silently.

Alive.

That was enough.

For now.

Across town...

Richard Harrington poured himself eighteen-year-old Scotch.

Vanessa paced nervously around his penthouse.

"She's going to tell everyone."

Richard remained calm.

"No."

"She won't."

Vanessa stared.

"What makes you so sure?"

Richard smiled.

"Because she'll be too busy recovering."

"And if Harrison comes after us?"

Richard laughed.

"I've already moved every dollar."

"He can sue all he wants."

"There's nothing left."

Vanessa finally relaxed.

Neither of them noticed the black SUV parked across the street.

Inside...

A retired IRS forensic investigator quietly photographed every visitor entering the building.

Harrison had hired him an hour earlier.

Forty-eight hours later...

Harrison entered Khloe's hospital room carrying a thick leather folder.

She looked pale.

Fragile.

The newborn slept inside the incubator beside her bed.

Tiny.

Covered in tubes.

Khloe burst into tears.

"I'm sorry..."

"I couldn't protect her."

Harrison sat beside her.

"You did."

"You survived."

He opened the folder.

"I need you to answer one question."

She looked at him.

"Do you still love Richard?"

Khloe thought for a long time.

Then slowly shook her head.

"I miss the man I thought he was."

"Not the man he became."

Harrison smiled for the first time in days.

"Good."

He slid the first document across the bed.

"What is this?"

"A criminal complaint."

"The police already arrested Vanessa."

"This isn't about Vanessa."

Khloe frowned.

Harrison's voice turned ice cold.

"It's about your husband."

"Attempted murder."

Richard laughed when detectives arrived at his office.

"This is ridiculous."

"I never touched my wife."

The lead detective placed a tablet on his desk.

"Watch."

Security footage.

High-definition.

Four different camera angles.

Richard watched himself standing beside Vanessa moments before the push.

He watched Vanessa glance at him.

He watched himself nod.

Just once.

Barely noticeable.

Then Vanessa shoved Khloe.

Richard's smile disappeared.

The detective leaned forward.

"We also recovered deleted messages."

One message read:

If she loses the baby, everything becomes easier.

Richard's face turned white.

The handcuffs clicked shut.

Outside the building...

Employees watched their billionaire CEO leave in the back of a police cruiser.

The stock price began falling before the elevator reached the lobby.

That night...

Harrison stood alone outside the NICU.

His niece wrapped her impossibly tiny fingers around one of his.

"I couldn't save Dad."

"I couldn't save Mom."

"But I swear..."

"No one will ever hurt you again."

He didn't realize someone had been standing behind him.

Judge Eleanor Brooks.

One of Pennsylvania's most respected federal judges.

"I've seen you destroy corporations before."

She looked through the nursery window.

"But I've never seen you fight for someone you love."

Harrison answered quietly.

"They made one mistake."

Judge Brooks raised an eyebrow.

"They thought they were fighting a lawyer."

He looked toward the city skyline.

"They're about to discover they're fighting a brother."
