Chapter 1: The Secret She Buried

Chapter 1: The Secret She Buried

The word hit her harder than any scream.

"Mother?"

Emily staggered backward.

Her wealthy son, Ethan, looked from the homeless boy to his mother, searching for an answer she had spent twelve years hiding.

"Tell me he's lying," Ethan whispered.

Emily couldn't.

The old locket was real.

The photographs were real.

And the handwriting belonged to her late husband.

Years earlier, she had given birth to twin boys after a difficult delivery.

She remembered hearing two newborn cries.

She remembered reaching for them.

Then everything went dark.

When she woke, the hospital director and her husband stood beside her bed.

"There were complications," they had told her.

"One baby survived."

She had begged to see the other child.

They claimed he had died.

No funeral.

No body.

Only paperwork.

She believed them because grief leaves little room for doubt.

Now the impossible stood barefoot in front of her.

The homeless boy lowered his eyes.

"My name is Noah."

Emily's knees nearly gave out.

She had already chosen that name before the twins were born.

No one else was supposed to know.

"Who gave you that locket?" she asked.

"My grandmother."

"My husband's mother?"

Noah nodded.

"She found me after the orphanage threw me out. She said my mother never abandoned me... she said I was stolen."

Emily covered her mouth.

Every lie she had accepted began collapsing at once.

Across the street, a black SUV suddenly stopped.

A silver-haired man stepped out.

The moment Noah saw him, he turned pale.

"We have to leave."

"Why?" Ethan asked.

"They're the people who have been looking for me."

The old man smiled.

But there was nothing kind behind his eyes.

"There you are, boy."

Emily instinctively stepped in front of Noah.

"You stay away from him."

The man laughed softly.

"You have no idea what you're protecting."

He walked away without another word.

But before entering the SUV, he looked directly at Emily.

"This family secret has already killed once."

Then he disappeared into Manhattan traffic.

For the first time in twelve years...

Emily realized her son's death certificate had been nothing more than the beginning of a much darker story.
