CHAPTER 1 — THE KEY SHE NEVER THREW AWAY

Daniel couldn't move.
The tiny brass key rested in the old woman's trembling palm.
The faded blue ribbon had lost its color years ago, but not enough.
He knew every thread.
Every frayed edge.
Every tiny knot tied by childish fingers.
Impossible.
He had buried those memories beneath decades of success.
Private schools.
Elite universities.
Corporate takeovers.
Magazine covers.
A billion-dollar company.
Everything carefully built upon one belief.
His mother had abandoned him.
That was the story his father repeated.
The story the lawyers confirmed.
The story every document supported.
She walked away.
She never came back.
She never searched.
Daniel had believed it because children always believe the adults who survive.
Now...
Nothing made sense.
His voice barely escaped.
"You died."
The old woman slowly shook her head.
"No."
"I disappeared."
Clara stepped between them.
"Daniel."
"We should go."
"This woman could be manipulating you."
But Daniel wasn't listening.
His eyes never left the old woman.
She reached into the pocket of her worn coat and removed an old envelope.
Its edges had yellowed with age.
His name was written across the front.
In childish handwriting.
For Danny's eighteenth birthday.
The date.
Twenty years earlier.
It had never been opened.
His heartbeat pounded in his ears.
"My father told me..."
"He told me you sold me."
The old woman's face collapsed.
"I fought for you."
"Every day."
"He bought everyone else."
Silence.
Then she whispered the name Daniel hadn't spoken in years.
"Richard."
His father.
The founder of the Ashcroft empire.
The man the world admired.
The man who had taught Daniel that weakness destroyed families.
The old woman slowly looked into Daniel's eyes.
May you like
"He didn't rescue you."
"He stole you."
