Three days later, Cole returned to the apartment.

Cole stood in the empty living room for the first time in his life, unable to control anything.
His phone kept ringing.

“You told me she knew nothing. You said she was weak. You were wrong.”
Across the city, Lauren sat beside her children’s hospital beds.
Lily’s fever had broken. Noah was sleeping peacefully.
She signed the final document.
