CHAPTER 14 — THE LAST ACCOUNT

The facility began to shake.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Emergency sirens screamed.
Raina, Sofia, Clara, Damon and Emma ran toward the emergency tunnel.
Behind them, Orson and his security team were fighting their way through Victor's guards.
A gunshot echoed.
Then another.
Raina stopped.
“Dad.”
Sofia grabbed her.
“He'll find us.”
“He's still inside.”
“I know.”
Raina turned.
“I can't leave him.”
Sofia stared at her.
“Your father has been waiting twenty-seven years for a chance to make this right.”
Raina's eyes filled with tears.
“Then I'm not leaving him.”
She turned around.
Damon stared at her.
“Raina!”
She ran back.
Sofia followed.
Clara sighed.
“Of course.”
They reached the main control room.
Orson stood in the center.
His shirt was torn.
Blood covered his shoulder.
But he was still standing.
Raina ran toward him.
“Dad!”
Orson caught her.
“Are you okay?”
“Mom is alive.”
Orson froze.
“Sofia?”
Sofia stepped forward.
Orson stared at her.
His eyes filled with tears.
“I thought you were dead.”
“So did I.”
Orson looked down.
“I failed you.”
Sofia shook her head.
“You saved our daughter.”
“I almost killed you.”
“But you didn't.”
Orson looked at Raina.
“I should have told you everything.”
Raina nodded.
“Yes.”
“I was afraid.”
“I know.”
“I thought the truth would destroy you.”
Raina touched his face.
“The lies almost did.”
Orson lowered his head.
“I am sorry.”
Raina hugged him.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Clara shouted,
“We have less than three minutes!”
Everyone turned.
The countdown was flashing.
00:02:54
Damon ran to the control panel.
“I can override it.”
“How?”
“The original system has a manual authorization.”
“What authorization?”
Damon looked at Raina.
“Yours.”
Raina frowned.
“My what?”
“Your genetic signature.”
Victor's voice came through the speaker.
“Go ahead, Raina.”
She looked at the monitor.
Victor was standing somewhere inside the facility.
“You want me to stop it.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“I want you to activate it.”
Raina froze.
“What happens if I do?”
“The system recognizes the original subject.”
“And then?”
“It opens everything.”
“What does everything mean?”
Victor smiled.
“All the files.”
Damon looked at her.
“Don't.”
Victor continued.
“Your mother's evidence.”
“The bank records.”
“The names.”
“The original Project Eden data.”
“And the account.”
Raina's eyes narrowed.
“What account?”
Victor's smile disappeared.
“The one your family has spent twenty-seven years trying to find.”
Raina understood.
The hidden reserve.
The original trust.
The money that had started everything.
“Where is it?”
Victor said nothing.
Raina stepped closer to the monitor.
“You want something from me.”
“Yes.”
“Then tell me.”
Victor smiled.
“The account is under your mother's name.”
Raina's heart pounded.
“Sofia?”
“No.”
Victor looked at her.
“Elena.”
Raina froze.
“But Elena is—”
“Alive.”
Raina turned toward Sofia.
Sofia's expression changed.
“You knew?”
Sofia looked away.
Raina's heart sank.
“Mom?”
Sofia whispered,
“Elena is not me.”
Raina stared.
“Then who is Elena?”
Sofia pointed toward the monitor.
Victor smiled.
“Your real mother is standing behind you.”
Everyone turned.
The door opened.
A woman stood there.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
A familiar scar.
Raina's breath stopped.
It was the woman from the photograph.
The woman from her dreams.
The woman whose voice she had heard through the intercom.
Elena.
Raina whispered,
“Mom.”
The woman began crying.
“My baby.”
Raina ran toward her.
They embraced.
For a moment, the entire world disappeared.
Then Elena pulled back.
“I am sorry.”
Raina was crying.
“Why did you leave me?”
“I didn't.”
“Then why?”
“Because Victor made me choose.”
“Choose what?”
“Your life or mine.”
Raina stared.
“I chose yours.”
Elena touched her face.
“I watched you grow up from a distance.”
“You knew Damon?”
“Yes.”
“You knew everything?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't you stop him?”
“Because I needed Damon close to Victor.”
Raina stared.
“He was working undercover?”
Elena nodded.
“Not willingly.”
Damon looked away.
Elena continued.
“He tried to protect you.”
Raina looked at him.
Damon's eyes were filled with shame.
“I failed.”
Raina nodded.
“Yes.”
Damon accepted it.
“But I found Emma.”
Raina looked at the little girl.
“And that matters.”
Damon's eyes filled with tears.
Victor suddenly appeared behind Elena.
He had a gun.
“Enough.”
Everyone froze.
Victor pointed the weapon at Raina.
“Give me the binder.”
Elena stepped forward.
“No.”
Victor aimed at her.
“You've ruined everything.”
“You ruined yourself.”
Victor laughed.
“You think the evidence will matter?”
Raina held up her phone.
“It already does.”
Victor's face changed.
“What?”
Raina smiled.
“Everything in this facility is being transmitted.”
Victor looked toward the cameras.
Orson's security chief smiled.
“You've been broadcasting your own confession.”
Victor's face went pale.
“You wouldn't.”
Orson stepped forward.
“I already did.”
Police sirens began echoing above the facility.
Victor looked around.
“No.”
Damon moved.
Victor fired.
The bullet missed Raina.
Orson tackled him.
The gun slid across the floor.
Clara kicked it away.
Victor fought violently.
But this time, he had nowhere to run.
Security officers restrained him.
Victor screamed,
“You don't understand!”
Raina looked at him.
“I understand perfectly.”
Victor stared at her.
“The money!”
Raina shook her head.
“You lost.”
“The account belongs to me!”
“No.”
She held up the binder.
“It belongs to the people you stole from.”
Victor laughed.
“Do you know how many powerful people are involved?”
Raina smiled.
“Enough.”
The police entered.
Victor was arrested.
For the first time in twenty-seven years, the man who had controlled everyone's lives was finally powerless.
But the story wasn't over.
Damon approached Raina.
He looked exhausted.
“I owe you an apology.”
Raina looked at him.
“You owe me more than one.”
“I know.”
“I don't forgive you.”
“I know.”
“But Emma deserves a father.”
Damon looked at his daughter.
Raina continued.
“So take care of her.”
Damon nodded.
“I will.”
Then Raina said,
“And never come near me again unless I ask.”
Damon swallowed.
“Understood.”
He walked away.
Clara watched him.
“You really aren't forgiving him?”
Raina looked at her.
“Forgiveness doesn't mean giving someone another chance to hurt you.”
Clara smiled.
“Good.”
Raina looked at her mother.
“What's going to happen now?”
Elena took her hand.
“Now you get to live.”
Six months later, the first trial began.
Victor Black was charged with conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, murder, illegal medical experimentation and financial crimes.
The evidence was overwhelming.
The Project Eden files exposed dozens of accomplices.
Several officials resigned.
Bank accounts were frozen.
Companies collapsed.
The Morrison family recovered assets that had been stolen for decades.
But Raina refused to keep most of the money.
She established a foundation.
Its purpose was simple.
To protect children whose identities had been stolen.
To help victims of financial crimes.
And to provide legal assistance to families trapped by powerful criminals.
Clara joined her.
Sofia became the foundation's director.
Elena remained mostly private.
And Orson—
Orson spent the rest of his life trying to earn back his daughter's trust.
Slowly.
One day at a time.
Not through promises.
Through actions.
And Damon?
He testified against Victor.
His cooperation helped locate several missing victims.
He eventually regained custody of Emma.
But he never tried to return to Raina's life.
Some mistakes could be forgiven.
May you like
Some relationships could not be rebuilt.
And Raina accepted that.
