Chapter 17 – The Betrayal Hidden in Our Bloodline

The screen went black.

But my mother’s final words remained.

**The person who betrayed us was inside the family.**

Nobody spoke.

Because every person on that bridge immediately started doing the same thing.

Calculating.

Searching.

Wondering.

Who?

Who had known?

Who had access?

Who had been close enough to betray my grandfather?

The answer was somewhere among us.

And that was the most terrifying part.

Not because I was surrounded by enemies.

I had faced enemies before.

Enemies were simple.

They wanted something.

They attacked.

They revealed themselves.

But betrayal was different.

Betrayal came from someone who knew where you kept your heart.

Someone who knew your weaknesses.

Someone you trusted enough to let close.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Daniel looked at me.

“Clara.”

I didn’t answer.

Because my mind was moving faster than my words.

My grandfather.

My mother.

The archive.

The hidden network.

The people who disappeared.

Every piece of the puzzle was connected.

But one question remained.

Who inside my family had helped them?

Lucas looked toward Adrian.

“You knew.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

Not much.

But enough.

Lucas stepped closer.

“You knew there was a traitor.”

Adrian remained silent.

“That’s why you were never afraid of the archive.”

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

Lucas turned toward me.

“Because Adrian always knew the archive could hurt him.”

A pause.

“But he never believed it would destroy him.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“Because he knew someone would protect him.”

The room became colder.

My eyes moved across everyone.

Ethan.

Mason.

Adrian.

Lucas.

Everyone had a connection to the past.

Everyone had secrets.

But only one person had betrayed my grandfather.

“Who?” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan laughed.

A quiet, bitter sound.

Everyone looked at him.

“You’re all still looking in the wrong direction.”

His face was exhausted.

Broken.

For the first time, he looked like a man who had lost everything.

“What are you talking about?” Mason asked.

Ethan looked at his son.

“I spent my entire life chasing power.”

A pause.

“I thought I was the smartest person in every room.”

He looked at Adrian.

“I was wrong.”

Adrian’s expression remained cold.

Ethan continued.

“There was always someone above us.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Victor Kane.”

Ethan nodded.

“But even Victor wasn’t the beginning.”

The bridge became silent.

I stared at him.

“What do you know?”

Ethan looked at me.

“I know your grandfather trusted the wrong person.”

My heartbeat slowed.

“Who?”

Ethan looked away.

And that hesitation told me everything.

He knew the answer.

But he was afraid to say it.

“Ethan.”

His eyes met mine.

“The person who betrayed your grandfather…”

He swallowed.

“Was the person he loved most.”

Nobody moved.

The words felt impossible.

My grandfather.

The strongest man I ever knew.

Betrayed by someone he loved.

My mind immediately rejected it.

“No.”

Ethan looked at me sadly.

“You want to believe that because it hurts less.”

I felt anger rise.

“You don’t know anything about my family.”

“No.”

His voice lowered.

“But I know what Adrian showed me.”

I looked at Adrian.

And for the first time, Adrian looked uncomfortable.

Not afraid.

Not angry.

Uncomfortable.

“What did he show you?”

Ethan looked at the floor.

“Records.”

“What records?”

“The original investigation.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You had access to the investigation?”

Ethan nodded.

“Adrian gave it to me years ago.”

“Why?”

A bitter smile.

“Because he knew I would do anything for power.”

That was the first honest thing Ethan had said.

“He wanted me loyal.”

Ethan looked at Adrian.

“And I was.”

A pause.

“Until I realized I was never his partner.”

Mason looked at his father.

“Who was the traitor?”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

“Your grandmother.”

The world stopped.

No.

Not possible.

My grandmother.

The woman who saved Lucas.

The woman who warned me.

The woman who helped expose Adrian.

My mind struggled to accept it.

Lucas immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You know I’m telling the truth.”

Lucas froze.

That reaction was enough.

I turned toward him.

“Lucas?”

He looked away.

My chest tightened.

“You knew?”

A long silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

The word hurt more than anything Adrian had done.

Because Lucas was family.

“What do you mean yes?”

Lucas took a breath.

“I knew there was a betrayal.”

He looked at me.

“I didn’t know everything.”

“But you knew?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

His face showed pain.

“Because I didn’t know who to trust.”

I looked around the room.

And suddenly I understood.

Everyone had been carrying pieces of the truth.

Everyone had been afraid.

Everyone had been protecting something.

And in doing so…

everyone had kept me in the dark.

My phone vibrated.

A new message.

Everyone looked.

Another unknown number.

I opened it.

Only one sentence.

**ASK YOUR GRANDMOTHER WHAT HAPPENED THE NIGHT YOUR GRANDFATHER DIED.**

My blood ran cold.

Because there was one problem.

My grandmother was the person everyone trusted.

The person who helped us.

The person who might have betrayed us.

Daniel looked at me.

“What are you thinking?”

I stared at the message.

“I’m thinking…”

I slowly looked toward the bridge cameras.

“We need to find my grandmother.”

Lucas shook his head.

“She won’t answer.”

I looked at him.

“She will.”

“Why?”

I held up my phone.

“Because whoever sent this wants me to ask.”

The room went silent.

And then I realized something.

The traitor inside my family was not just hiding.

They were guiding us.

Someone wanted me to uncover the truth.

Someone wanted Adrian exposed.

Someone wanted Victor Kane destroyed.

But why?

The answer came moments later.

The bridge screens turned on.

A video appeared.

My grandmother.

Margaret Harper.

She looked directly into the camera.

Her expression was not fearful.

Not guilty.

Determined.

“Clara.”

Everyone froze.

Her voice was calm.

“I know what they told you.”

A pause.

“I know what you believe now.”

She looked down.

“And I know you think I betrayed your grandfather.”

My heart pounded.

She continued:

“But there is one thing nobody has told you.”

The screen flickered.

“The night your grandfather died…”

A pause.

“He wasn’t murdered.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

My grandmother looked directly at me.

“He was killed because he chose to die.”

The bridge became silent.

Nobody breathed.

My grandmother whispered:

“Because he discovered something so dangerous…”

A tear appeared in her eye.

“That he believed the only way to protect you was to let the world believe he was gone.”

The screen flickered.

Then she said the words that changed everything:

“Clara, your grandfather’s death was not the beginning of this war.”

A pause.

“It was his final move.”

The video ended.

And for the first time…

I realized something terrifying.

My grandfather had not been a victim.

He had been playing the game before anyone else knew there was one.

And now I was standing exactly where he wanted me to be.

At the center of the truth.
