Chapter 4 — Justice Has a Long Memory

Nine months later...

The courtroom was silent.

Nathan sat at the defense table in a plain gray suit.

Gone were the custom tuxedos.

Gone was the confidence.

Gone was the man who believed he could never lose.

The prosecution played the wedding footage one final time.

No dramatic speeches were necessary.

The video spoke for itself.

The jury deliberated less than two hours.

"Guilty."

On every count.

Child abuse.

Assault causing bodily injury.

Filing a false police report.

Evidence tampering.

Fraud connected to the family foundation.

Nathan lowered his head as the judge imposed a lengthy prison sentence.

He looked toward me one last time.

I felt nothing.

Not hatred.

Not satisfaction.

Only peace.

Outside the courthouse...

Reporters crowded the steps.

One asked me if I felt victorious.

I looked at Emma.

She was laughing while feeding pigeons across the plaza.

The scar hidden beneath her hair was the only reminder of that terrible night.

"This was never about winning," I answered.

"It was about making sure my daughter grows up knowing the truth."

"That being innocent doesn't always protect you."

"But courage can."

Two years later...

Emma stood on another aisle.

This time...

She was once again a flower girl.

She wore white ribbons in her hair.

She scattered petals while smiling from ear to ear.

When the ceremony ended...

She slipped her tiny hand into mine.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Do you still think wolves never love lambs?"

I smiled.

"I think some wolves never change."

"But I also learned something else."

"What?"

"There are shepherds."

"There are friends."

"There are strangers brave enough to stand beside the innocent."

"And because of them..."

"The wolves don't always win."

Emma squeezed my hand.

Outside...

The afternoon sun poured through the stained-glass windows.

Warm.

Golden.

Nothing like the cold lights of that ballroom.

I looked up at the clear blue sky and took a deep breath.

The family I had lost was built on fear.

The family I had found was built on love.

And love...

Unlike lies...

Never needed a security camera to prove it.

The End
