Chapter 3 — The Truth Everyone Protected

The next morning...

The police invited me to the hotel.

Daniel replayed the security footage.

No sound.

No interruptions.

Just truth.

Camera One.

Preston walked toward our table while everyone watched the bride and groom dance.

He casually picked up Sophie's denim jacket.

Looked over his shoulder.

Slipped his own iPhone into her pocket.

Three seconds.

That was all it took.

Then he walked away smiling.

Camera Two.

Ten minutes later...

He announced the phone was missing.

Exactly as planned.

Camera Three.

When I stepped between him and Sophie...

He deliberately ripped the oak menu board from its stand.

He raised it.

Paused.

Looked directly at my daughter.

Then swung with both hands.

The detective stopped the video.

"This wasn't losing his temper."

He looked straight at me.

"This was intentional."

My hands trembled.

Not from fear.

From relief.

For the first time in my life...

Someone believed me.

Hours later...

The footage spread through the wedding guests.

Phones buzzed.

Messages exploded.

People who had stayed silent the night before suddenly found their voices.

"I'm so sorry."

"I should have helped."

"I didn't know."

But apologies arrived too late.

The damage had already been done.

By evening...

The story reached local news.

The groom who framed his eight-year-old niece.

The uncle who assaulted a child.

The wedding that ended in handcuffs.

Preston was arrested outside the luxury condo he shared with his new wife.

He never looked at the cameras.

He only searched the crowd...

Looking for our parents.

They weren't there.

Because even they couldn't protect him anymore.
