Chapter 18 - Brooke Mercer’s Testimony

Brooke testified for three days.
She admitted the money.
The affair.
The delivery.
The lies.
Her father’s manipulation.
Her own greed.
She did not ask for sympathy.
That mattered.
At sentencing, the judge asked whether I wanted to speak.
I did.
Brooke looked at me from across the courtroom.
“I spent years thinking betrayal happens because someone stops loving you.”
I paused.
“But sometimes people betray you while loving you.”
The room remained silent.
“That is harder to understand.”
Brooke cried.
“I believe Brooke loved me.”
Her face crumpled.
“I also believe she envied me.”
I looked directly at her.
“She loved Ethan.”
“She loved money.”
“She feared her father.”
“She wanted approval.”
“She wanted power.”
“None of those things erased her choices.”
I took a breath.
“I do not want revenge.”
Brooke looked up.
“But I do want consequences.”
She received thirty-two months in federal prison after cooperation reduced her sentence.
Her father received decades.
Before marshals led him away, Richard looked at Brooke.
She did not look back.
Maybe that was his real punishment.
Months later, Brooke sent me a letter.
I did not open it immediately.
Eventually I did.
One page.
Mary,
I used to think being close to powerful people made me powerful.
Then I watched you give power away and realized I never understood strength.
I don’t expect an answer.
I only wanted to tell you that I finally stopped blaming my father, Ethan, you, your family, money, jealousy, or fear.
I did what I did.
I am sorry.
Brooke.
I folded the letter.
Put it away.
And wrote no reply.

Not yet.
Forgiveness could wait until it was real.
