Chapter 3 — The Price of the Truth

Three days later...
The Mercer family emergency board meeting became the biggest scandal in the company's history.
Every director sat in silence.
Damien entered carrying one folder.
No lawyers.
No assistants.
Just the truth.
"My mother forged communications."
He laid copies onto the table.
"She intercepted emails."
Another document.
"She paid investigators to monitor Mara."
Another.
"She concealed a confirmed DNA report."
The room fell silent.
Victoria sat motionless.
She had spent decades building the Mercer name.
Now her own son was dismantling the empire she had protected.
When the meeting ended, the board voted unanimously.
Victoria Mercer resigned as Chairwoman effective immediately.
She walked out without saying goodbye.
Outside the building, reporters surrounded her.
She answered none of their questions.
Across town, Mara watched the news from her small living room.
The twins sat on the floor building robots together.
They had no idea the world outside was changing because of them.
There was a knock at the door.
Damien.
He stood there holding nothing.
No flowers.
No expensive gifts.
No lawyers.
"I don't deserve forgiveness."
Mara remained silent.
"I can't ask for another chance."
Still nothing.
"But I would like one chance to know them."
Noah peeked around the hallway.
"Mom... is that the man from the mall?"
Mara looked at Damien.
Then at her sons.
"The choice isn't mine anymore."
She knelt beside the boys.
"This is Damien."
"He is your biological father."
Neither child spoke.
Ethan finally asked,
"Why didn't he come before?"
Damien lowered his head.
May you like
"Because I failed."
It was the first completely honest sentence he had spoken in years.
