CHAPTER 10 — The Truth They Had Ignored for Seven Years

Daniel stared at the endless stream of notifications lighting up his phone.

Messages.

Missed calls.

Unknown numbers.

Social media alerts.

His screen refreshed every few seconds.

He frowned.

"What on earth..."

Emily was sitting on the living room floor, coloring a picture of Rosie the teddy bear.

She looked up.

"Daddy?"

"It's nothing, sweetheart."

He didn't want her worrying.

He unlocked the phone.

The first message was from Richard.

I'm so sorry. Please call me when you can.

The second came from an old college friend.

I just saw the video. Are you and Emily okay?

Then another.

You're all over the internet.

Daniel's heartbeat slowed.

He tapped the link.

The video began to play.

He watched silently.

There he was...

walking into the birthday party with Emily in his arms.

He heard Eleanor's voice.

He watched himself remain calm.

Then he saw something he hadn't noticed in the moment.

Emily's tiny hand reaching up...

trying to cover his ear.

Trying to protect him.

Daniel stopped the video.

His vision blurred.

He set the phone on the kitchen table and leaned against the counter.

For seven years...

he had believed he was the one protecting Emily.

He never imagined that somewhere along the way...

his little girl had begun trying to protect him too.

"Daddy?"

Emily walked over, holding her unfinished drawing.

"Are you sad?"

Daniel immediately smiled.

"A little."

She frowned.

"Did somebody hurt your feelings?"

He knelt in front of her.

"No."

She gently touched his cheek.

"Mommy said..."

Daniel blinked.

"What did Mommy say?"

Emily smiled proudly.

"You told me."

"When people love each other..."

"They share the hurting."

Daniel closed his eyes for a second.

He had told her that years ago.

She had remembered.

He hugged her tightly.

"You're right."

Across town...

the Carter mansion looked unusually quiet.

The decorations were still hanging.

The birthday cake had been thrown away.

Only half the balloons remained.

The celebration had ended hours earlier.

Yet no one had gone to sleep.

Eleanor sat in the library, staring out the window.

Richard walked in carrying an old photo album.

Without asking permission, he placed it on the coffee table.

"What is this?"

"You should look."

"I've seen every family album."

"No."

He slowly opened it.

"You've seen every picture."

"But you stopped seeing the people inside them."

Eleanor frowned.

Richard turned to a photograph taken nearly eight years earlier.

It showed Daniel standing beside his wife, Sarah.

She was laughing.

Pregnant with Emily.

Daniel's arm rested protectively around her shoulders.

The entire family stood together.

Including Eleanor.

In that picture...

she was smiling.

Richard pointed at it.

"Do you remember this day?"

"Of course."

"It was before everything changed."

Richard looked directly at her.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"Everything changed because Sarah died."

"You changed."

Eleanor looked away.

Richard continued.

"You blamed Daniel because it was easier than facing your own grief."

"I did no such thing."

"You absolutely did."

He turned another page.

There were photographs of Daniel bringing flowers for family holidays.

Fixing Eleanor's porch after a storm.

Helping cousins move into new homes.

Babysitting nieces and nephews.

Standing beside everyone whenever they needed him.

Richard sighed.

"When was the last time Daniel ever asked this family for anything?"

Eleanor stayed silent.

"Never."

"He never asked for money."

"Never asked for favors."

"Never asked for sympathy."

"He simply raised his daughter."

Richard closed the album.

"And somehow..."

"That became his greatest crime in your eyes."

For the first time that evening...

Eleanor couldn't find an argument.

She simply stared at the photographs.

Meanwhile...

Sophia sat awake in bed scrolling through thousands of comments beneath the video.

One comment caught her attention.

'The father never defended himself. He defended his daughter's childhood.'

She read it again.

Then again.

She remembered Daniel picking up Emily's teddy bear after it fell.

Brushing invisible dust from it before placing it back into her arms.

Such a small moment.

Yet it revealed everything.

He hadn't cared who was watching.

He only cared that Emily didn't feel embarrassed.

Sophia suddenly remembered something else.

Years ago...

when Sarah was still alive...

Daniel had quietly paid for Lily's emergency surgery after an accident at daycare.

No one had known.

He had begged the hospital not to tell anyone.

Sophia had only discovered the truth months later through a billing mistake.

Daniel never mentioned it.

Never asked to be repaid.

Never wanted credit.

She slowly lowered her phone.

A painful realization settled over her.

The family had spent years calling Daniel selfish.

Yet he had quietly carried burdens that weren't even his own.

Back in his small house, Daniel switched off the kitchen light.

He tucked Emily into bed.

She hugged Rosie under her blanket.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"When Lily misses me..."

"Can she call?"

Daniel smiled.

"Anytime."

Emily yawned.

"I hope Grandma stops being angry."

Daniel gently kissed her forehead.

"So do I."

He turned off the bedroom light and quietly closed the door.

He didn't know that, less than five miles away...

someone was sitting alone with an old family photo in trembling hands.

For the first time in years...

Eleanor Carter wasn't wondering whether Daniel had embarrassed the family.

May you like

She was beginning to wonder...

whether the family had been wrong about him all along.
