Chapter 1: The Empty Ballroom

The ballroom remained silent long after the doors closed behind them.
No music.
No laughter.
No wedding.
Only hundreds of guests staring at the bride standing alone beneath the crystal chandeliers.
For the first time in her life, Amelia felt truly exposed.
Not because people were looking at her.
Because they were seeing her.
The woman she had slapped.
The woman she had dismissed.
The woman she had judged without asking a single question.
The groom's mother.
A single tear rolled down Amelia's cheek.
Then another.
But no one rushed to comfort her.
No one told her it was okay.
Because deep down, everyone knew it wasn't.
Outside, rain had begun to fall.
Daniel guided his mother beneath the shelter of the hotel entrance.
She looked small.
Fragile.
Yet somehow stronger than everyone inside that ballroom.
"Mom," Daniel whispered.
She smiled sadly.
"You should go back."
"No."
"You love her."
Daniel looked toward the glowing windows of the ballroom.
For a moment, he remembered the woman he had proposed to.
The woman who once volunteered at shelters.
The woman who cried during old movies.
The woman he thought he knew.
Then he remembered the sound of that slap.
And the way nobody mattered to Amelia unless they belonged in her world.
"I don't know who she is anymore," he said quietly.
His mother squeezed his hand.
"Then maybe this isn't the end of your wedding."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
She looked at him with gentle eyes.
May you like
"Maybe it's the beginning of the truth."
And for the first time that night, Daniel wondered if losing a wedding might save a marriage that hadn't even started.
