Chapter 15 — What Happened at 11:40

The fire was still burning when Ronan realized something.

The clock above the kitchen door had stopped.

11:40.

Exactly 11:40.

Tessa stared at it.

“That isn't a coincidence.”

“No,” Elias said.

“It never was.”

Marcus turned toward him.

“Then tell us what happened at 11:40.”

Elias didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at the burning kitchen.

“Fourteen years ago, your mother was supposed to die at that exact minute.”

Ronan's jaw tightened.

“She didn't.”

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

Elias looked at Tessa.

“Your mother changed the plan.”

Fourteen years earlier.

11:17 p.m.

A woman lay motionless on the basement floor of Beaumont House.

The official records said she was Ronan Callahan's mother.

They were wrong.

The woman beneath the white sheet was Sarah Boudreaux.

And Sarah was still alive.

Barely.

Eda stood over her, shaking.

“She's breathing.”

Daniel Callahan checked the hallway.

“Then we have minutes.”

Ronan's mother pressed one hand against her bleeding side.

“I need you to listen.”

Sarah opened her eyes.

“Take my clothes.”

Eda stared at her.

“No.”

“Eda.”

“No.”

“They're going to come back.”

“They'll kill you.”

“They already think I'm dead.”

Her eyes moved toward the child hidden beneath a blanket.

Little Tessa.

Barely old enough to understand what was happening.

Ronan's mother touched the child's cheek.

“She cannot stay here.”

Eda began crying.

“I'll take her.”

“You must.”

A door slammed upstairs.

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

“They're coming.”

Ronan's mother removed her coat.

“Then make them believe Sarah is me.”

Eda understood.

The deception was simple.

Cruel.

Necessary.

At 11:40, the covered body was carried out.

Everyone believed Ronan's mother was dead.

But she wasn't.

At 11:52, she arrived at Mercy Home.

Alive.

And at 12:14, she disappeared again.

Not by choice.

By order.

Ronan stared at Elias.

“Who took her from Mercy Home?”

Elias's expression changed.

“Your father.”

The words hit harder than any gunshot.

Ronan stepped forward.

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

“My father died believing she was dead.”

“No.”

Elias shook his head.

“He knew exactly what happened.”

Tessa looked at the old photograph.

“Then why did he let Ronan believe she died?”

Elias answered quietly.

“Because a dead woman couldn't testify.”

Ronan's eyes filled with rage.

“What could she testify about?”

Elias looked toward Marcus.

“The money.”

Marcus's expression changed.

“The ledgers.”

“Yes.”

“The shell companies.”

“Yes.”

“The Beaumont House accounts.”

“Yes.”

Elias finally looked at Ronan.

“And the name of the man who ordered everything.”

Ronan's voice was barely audible.

“Who?”

Elias didn't answer.

He simply said:

“You already know.”

A car stopped outside.

Ronan raised his weapon.

Marcus looked through the broken window.

“No headlights.”

The doors opened.

Two people stepped out.

One was Arthur Fletcher.

The other was a woman.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Walking with a cane.

Tessa stared.

“Evelyn?”

Evelyn looked directly at her.

Then she said:

“It's time you knew what Eda was protecting you from.”

She raised a trembling hand.

And pointed toward Ronan.

“Your family.”

Ronan froze.

Then Evelyn added:

“Not the Callahans.”

May you like

“The man behind them.”

And suddenly, the entire story changed.
