CHAPTER 1 — THE DOG IN KENNEL 11

The shelter guide was explaining adoption programs when Lily quietly drifted away from her classmates.
The noise of barking dogs echoed through the building. Children laughed and pointed at puppies pressing against the kennel gates.
Lily smiled politely, but her attention was elsewhere.
She moved slowly down the row of kennels, greeting each dog with simple hand signals.
Most ignored her.
Some barked.
Some jumped.
Some turned away completely.
Then she reached Kennel 11.
Inside sat a large German Shepherd with dark fur and tired eyes.
Unlike the other dogs, he didn't bark.
He didn't move.
A sign attached to the gate read:
REX — NOT RESPONSIVE.
The shelter volunteers said he had been rescued months earlier from an abandoned property. He rarely reacted to commands and showed little interest in people.
Lily stared at him.
Rex stared back.
Slowly, she raised her hand and signed a simple command she used with her mother's dog.
"Sit."
The shepherd immediately sat straighter.
Lily blinked.
Maybe it was coincidence.
She signed another command.
"Come."
Rex stood and walked directly to the gate.
The shelter volunteer nearly dropped her clipboard.
Within minutes, a crowd had gathered.
Lily continued signing.
Sit.
Stay.
Turn.
Lie down.
Rex obeyed every command perfectly.
No hesitation.
No confusion.
No mistakes.

And for the first time in a very long time, Lily felt completely understood.
