Chapter 15 - NORA’S LAST LIE

Nora had not escaped.
She had been released.
A forged court transfer order instructed officers to move her from federal protective custody to a county detention facility.
The signatures looked authentic.
The transport vehicle was authentic.
The two officers were not.
They abandoned the vehicle beneath a highway overpass.
No Nora.
No witnesses.
Ethan read the report in silence.
Amelia did not look surprised.
“You suspected her.”
He said.
“I suspected everyone.”
“Even me?”
“For about three minutes.”
“When?”
“After I woke up.”
Ethan looked offended.
She smiled faintly.
“You were older.”
He almost laughed.
Then seriousness returned.
“What would Nora want?”
Amelia stared at Lily through the window.
“Her.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“No.”
“Nora raised Lily.”
“She also abused her.”
“Yes.”
“But people can be possessive even when they are cruel.”
Amelia thought.
“Nora used to tell me Lily belonged to her because she was the one who fed her.”
“That you and I were strangers.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Where would she go?”
Lily answered from the doorway.
“The blue house.”
Everyone turned.
“What blue house?”
Ethan asked.
Lily hesitated.
“Aunt Nora said we would live there someday.”
“Where?”
“Near water.”
“Do you know the town?”
“No.”
“What did it look like?”
Lily drew.
A blue cottage.
White fence.
Tall lighthouse.
Amelia recognized it.
“Cape May.”
Nora had grown up in New Jersey.
Property records found a small blue cottage registered under her mother’s maiden name.
Police surrounded it before sunset.
Empty.
But recently occupied.
Children’s clothes.
Canned food.
Cash.
Fake passports.
And a photograph of Lily taken only three days earlier through a telephoto lens.
Nora had been planning to take her.
Ruiz found another item.
A voice recorder.
One file.
Nora speaking.
“If Ethan hears this, I’m already gone.”
Ethan listened.
“I know you think Victor bought me seven years ago.”
“He did.”
“But the first person who paid me was Harold.”
Amelia closed her eyes.
Another layer.
Nora continued.
“Harold told me Victor planned to kill the baby.”
“He paid me to hide Lily.”
“Then Victor found me and paid me to keep hiding her from Ethan.”
“I took money from both.”
“At first, I told myself Lily was safer with me.”
“Then I stopped caring why.”
“I loved her.”
Lily looked confused.
Amelia pulled her close.
The recording continued.
“When Victor ordered me into Ethan’s house, Harold approved it.”
“He wanted Lily close to the family.”
“He said one day she would be useful.”
“Peter found out last year.”
“He offered me money to disappear with Lily.”
“I refused.”
“Then he threatened me.”
“So I sent men to the signal tower to kill him.”
Ethan frowned.
Nora ordered the attack.
Not to kill Harold.
To kill Peter’s people?
The recording clarified.
“Peter planned to take Daniel.”
“He wanted another child as leverage.”
“I sent men I thought were loyal to Victor.”
“I didn’t know police would be there.”
Ruiz paused the file.
“This is messy.”
Ethan looked at her.
“That might be the first accurate description of my family.”
They continued.
Nora’s voice became shakier.
“I poisoned the tea.”
Ethan stared.
“Victor told me Ethan had to die.”
“But the amount was my choice.”
Hayes frowned.
“What does that mean?”
The recording answered.
“I used less than Victor ordered.”
“I thought Ethan would get sick.”
“Not die.”
Hayes shook his head.
“That amount could absolutely have killed him.”
Nora continued.
“I’m not asking forgiveness.”
“I hurt Lily.”
“I frightened her.”
“I told myself fear would keep her alive.”
“That was a lie.”
“I used fear because it made her easier to control.”
Amelia’s eyes filled with anger.
At least Nora understood one truth.
The final part changed everything.
“Harold contacted me last night.”
“He said he was done.”
“He wants to confess.”
“But he doesn’t trust police.”
“He told me there is one final piece of evidence.”
“A recording made by Thomas Blackwood before he died.”
Ethan stood.
His father.
“He said the recording proves exactly who killed Thomas.”
“Where?”
Nora’s voice became quiet.
“St. Matthew’s Cemetery.”
“The Blackwood mausoleum.”
“Behind Thomas’s memorial plaque.”
The recording ended.
Ruiz looked at Ethan.
“Could be a trap.”
“Yes.”
“Which means you’re not going.”
He stared at her.
Ruiz sighed.
“Why do I keep saying that?”
At midnight, police opened the Blackwood mausoleum.
Ethan went under escort.
His father’s bronze plaque covered one wall.
THOMAS EDWARD BLACKWOOD
1958–2010
FATHER. LEADER. VISIONARY.
Ethan hated the words now.
Too clean.
Workers removed the plaque.
Behind it was a small metal box.
Inside sat a cassette recorder.
Old.
Dusty.
And a handwritten note.
ETHAN.
His father’s writing.
They played the tape.
Thomas’s voice filled the mausoleum.
Weak.
Breathing heavily.
“Ethan, if you ever hear this, I failed.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I helped Harold hide what your grandfather did.”
“I told myself we were protecting the company.”
“Then I became part of it.”
“I approved bribes.”
“I destroyed evidence.”
“I ruined people.”
His father coughed.
“I wanted to stop.”
“Harold would not.”
“He began dosing my medication.”
“I know because Amelia found the records.”
Ethan froze.
Amelia had known before Thomas died?
The tape continued.
“I asked Victor for help.”
“He agreed.”
“Then betrayed me.”
“Victor and Harold are both responsible for my death.”
Ethan clenched his fist.
“But if you are hearing this, there is something worse.”
A long silence.
“Peter Vaughn knows.”
Ethan frowned.
Peter would have been in his early twenties.
A junior analyst.
Thomas continued.
“Peter’s father was one of the men I destroyed.”
“Robert Vaughn.”
Ethan knew that name too.
A supplier driven into bankruptcy after Blackwood canceled contracts.
Robert later died by suicide.
Peter had entered Blackwood Industries years afterward.
Another son of another ruined man.
Another revenge story.
Thomas’s voice weakened.
“If Peter ever discovers the full truth, he may come for all of us.”
The tape ended.
Ruiz exhaled.
“So Peter wasn’t just opportunistic.”
“No.”
Ethan stared at his father’s plaque.
“He came for revenge too.”
A phone rang.
One of Ruiz’s agents answered.
Then looked toward her.
“We found Nora.”
“Where?”
“Hospital emergency room.”
“Condition?”
“Critical.”
“What happened?”
The agent swallowed.
“She was stabbed.”
Ethan looked at Ruiz.
“By Peter?”
The agent shook his head.
“Nora said one name before surgery.”
Everyone waited.
The agent continued.
“Claire Mercer.”
Victor’s daughter.
May you like
The woman helping them uncover the truth.
And suddenly Ethan realized revenge had infected the next generation too.
