Hospital security reviewed the surveillance footage.
Marissa had entered Noah's room the night after the cast was applied.
She stayed exactly twelve minutes.
No one else entered.
When detectives questioned her, she smiled calmly.
"I was checking on my stepson."
But Evelyn wasn't convinced.
She remembered something else.
The expensive perfume.
The tiny screwdriver hidden inside Marissa's handbag.
And the strange pharmacy receipt she had accidentally seen while cleaning the house.
While Daniel spoke with the police, Evelyn drove to the mansion.
Inside the kitchen trash she found an empty package of industrial adhesive.
Hidden beneath it was a pair of surgical gloves.
Both carried traces of plaster dust.
She immediately called Detective Harris.
Within an hour, officers searched the house.
In Marissa's private study they discovered a locked cabinet.
Inside were dozens of journals.
Every page described Noah.
His routines.
His fears.
His allergies.
His punishments.
One sentence chilled every investigator.
"Pain teaches obedience faster than love."
Another file contained insurance documents.
If Noah died before turning eighteen, a multimillion-dollar trust would transfer entirely to Daniel.
If Daniel later died...
Everything became Marissa's.
She hadn't simply hated the boy.
She had been preparing for something far worse.
That evening she was arrested for child abuse, evidence tampering, and attempted aggravated assault.
As officers placed handcuffs on her wrists, she smiled one last time.
"You still don't know everything."
