CHAPTER 2: THE MAN WHO WATCHED

Silence swallowed the ballroom.
Olivia still held Charlotte Whitmore's wrist.
For several long seconds, nobody moved.
Then a deep voice cut through the tension.
"That's enough."
The words weren't loud.
They didn't need to be.
Every person in the room immediately recognized the speaker.
Adrian Romano.
The billionaire stepped forward from the crowd.
His tailored black suit fit perfectly. His expression remained calm.
Yet the room seemed to shift around him.
Power had entered the conversation.
Charlotte instantly pulled her hand back.
"Adrian," she said, forcing a smile. "This is just a misunderstanding."
"No," Adrian replied quietly. "I don't think it is."
His eyes moved to his mother.
Elena Romano sat silently in her wheelchair.
For the first time that evening, emotion appeared on Adrian's face.
Concern.
Respect.
Protectiveness.
"Mother, are you alright?"
Elena smiled gently.
"I'm fine."
Charlotte's confidence began to fade.
Several guests exchanged nervous glances.
They suddenly realized they had witnessed something they were never supposed to see.
Adrian turned toward Olivia.
She felt her stomach tighten.
The most powerful man in the room was looking directly at her.
"Thank you," he said.
Only two words.
Yet they stunned everyone.
Olivia blinked.
"I was only helping."
"And most people didn't."
The ballroom became even quieter.
Because Adrian was right.
Hundreds of people had watched.
Only one person had acted.
Olivia.
Before returning to the gala, Adrian handed her a business card.
"If you ever need anything, call."
She almost laughed.
People like her didn't call people like him.
May you like
But she accepted the card anyway.
She had no idea that within days, she would desperately need it.
