CHAPTER 1 — THE NOTE THAT NEVER DIED

CHAPTER 1 — THE NOTE THAT NEVER DIED

Emily didn’t open the note right away.

Her fingers stayed frozen around the fragile paper as if it might burn her if she learned what was inside. The diner around her suddenly felt too loud—plates clinking, the hiss of the coffee machine, footsteps that came and went like nothing had changed in the last twenty years.

But everything had.

The old woman across from her—once just a stranger in need—now looked like a doorway to a life Emily had been told was gone forever.

“You’re lying,” Emily whispered, though her voice lacked conviction.

The old woman shook her head slowly. “I wish I was.”

Emily finally unfolded the note.

The paper trembled so hard she almost dropped it. The handwriting was uneven, rushed, as if written under fear rather than time.

He watches everything I do. He thinks you are leverage.
I had to let them believe I left you.
I am still close. I am always close.
Forgive me for the story you were forced to live.

Emily stopped breathing.

The word he pressed into her mind like a bruise.

“Who is ‘he’?” she asked, barely audible.

The old woman’s eyes lowered.

“The man who owns this diner,” she said. “And much more than this diner.”

Before Emily could respond, the lights flickered once.

Then again.

And somewhere behind the kitchen doors, something metallic dropped hard onto the floor.
