Chapter 2: The Betrayal Unmasked

Olivia could barely breathe.

The second photograph trembled in her hands.

There was no mistake.

Standing beside Daniel in the storage room was Emily Carter.

Her maid of honor.

Her confidante.

The woman who had helped choose her wedding dress.

Who had planned the bridal shower.

Who had held her hand when she cried over losing her parents years earlier.

The same woman now stood beside the man who had almost poisoned her.

Emily's face turned ghostly white.

"It's not what you think," she whispered.

Olivia slowly lifted her eyes.

"Twelve years."

Her voice was calm.

Far too calm.

"I trusted you for twelve years."

Emily took a step forward.

"I can explain."

"No."

Olivia stepped back.

"You can tell the police."

Across the ballroom, officers were forcing Daniel to his feet.

His expensive tuxedo was stained with frosting and dust.

For the first time in years, the charming businessman looked terrified.

Detective Aaron Blake, one of the off-duty officers, approached Dr. Harper.

"Doctor, are you willing to testify?"

"I'll testify under oath."

The detective nodded.

Then he turned toward Daniel.

"You are under arrest for attempted murder."

Daniel laughed.

A cold, hollow laugh.

"You can't prove I intended to kill her."

Before anyone answered, Sophie quietly raised her phone again.

"I recorded more than the pictures."

The room froze.

She pressed play.

Daniel's voice echoed through the silent ballroom.

"One bite is enough. She'll be unconscious before anyone realizes."

Emily's voice followed.

"And once she's in the hospital, everything transfers to you."

Olivia closed her eyes.

The words sliced deeper than any knife.

This had never been about love.

It had been about her family's fortune.

The ballroom erupted.

Guests shouted.

Some cried.

Others stared in disbelief.

Emily collapsed into a chair, sobbing.

Daniel said nothing.

He knew it was over.

As police led both conspirators away in handcuffs, Olivia turned toward Sophie.

"You saved my life."

Sophie lowered her head.

"I just did what anyone should have done."

Olivia gently shook her head.

"No."

"Most people would have stayed silent."

"You didn't."

For the first time that night...

Olivia smiled.

May you like

Not because she was happy.

But because she was alive.
