CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET IN THE BACKPACK

At the hospital, Noah was rushed into intensive care.
Emma refused to leave his side.
Not even for food.
Not even for sleep.
Daniel stayed with her for hours.
Eventually, she began talking.
Their mother had died six months earlier.
Cancer.
After that, they had been placed with a distant relative named Carl.
The man received government assistance for caring for them.
But almost none of the money reached the children.
Carl drank.
Gambled.
And often disappeared for days.
When Noah became sick, Carl refused to take him to a doctor.
"He said babies die all the time," Emma whispered.
Daniel clenched his fists.
The anger inside him burned.
Then Emma handed him an old backpack.
"This belonged to Mom."
Inside were photographs.
Birth certificates.
Medical records.
And one sealed envelope.
Daniel opened it carefully.
The letter was written by Emma's mother shortly before her death.
As he read, his expression changed.
Then changed again.
The letter revealed that Carl had never been their legal guardian.
He had forged documents after their mother's death.
Even worse, he had been collecting benefits illegally for months.
The children had effectively been kidnapped by the very man claiming to protect them.
Daniel immediately contacted detectives.
Within twenty-four hours, police arrested Carl.
The investigation uncovered years of fraud and abuse.
News stations covered the story across the state.
People donated clothes.
Money.
Toys.
Offers of help poured in.
But Emma only cared about one thing.
Every morning she asked the same question.
"When can Noah come home?"
Daniel never had an answer.
Because neither child had a home anymore.
And every night, after leaving the hospital, Daniel found himself thinking about them.
More and more.
Until one evening his wife finally asked:
"Why do you look like you're carrying the weight of the world?"
Daniel stared at her.
Then quietly replied:
"Because two children have nobody."
May you like
His wife smiled.
"Maybe that's not true."
