Chapter 2 – The Stranger at Table Twelve

Outside, rain had begun to fall.
Emma stood beneath the awning, wondering how she would tell her mother she had lost the only job keeping them afloat.
The elderly man stepped outside beside her.
"My name is Arthur Bennett."
Emma offered a tired smile.
"I'm Emma."
"I know."
She looked surprised.
"I've watched you serve this restaurant for months."
"You remember me?"
"I remember character."
Arthur handed her a simple business card.
There was no company logo.
Only a name.
Bennett Hospitality Group.
"I own several hotels."
Emma laughed softly.
"I suppose tonight isn't the best night to apply."
Arthur shook his head.
"I'm not offering you a job as a waitress."
She looked confused.
"I've been searching for someone to lead a new employee relations division."
Emma blinked.
"I don't have that kind of experience."
Arthur smiled.
"Experience teaches people how to follow policies."
He looked back through the restaurant window, where Vivian continued yelling at the staff.
"Character teaches people how to protect others."
He paused.
"And character is much harder to find."
The next morning, Emma walked into Bennett Hospitality's headquarters wearing the only blazer she owned.
Three interviews.
Four executives.
One final meeting.
Arthur asked only one question.
"If your employer embarrassed a customer publicly, what would you do?"
Emma answered without hesitation.
"I would defend what's right, even if it cost me my position."
Arthur smiled.
"It already did."
He stood and extended his hand.
"Welcome to the executive team."

Across town, Vivian Whitmore was still celebrating what she believed had been a victory.
She had no idea the woman she humiliated yesterday would soon oversee employee standards for the company preparing to purchase several struggling Whitmore hotels.
