Chapter 18 - THE MANILA FOLDER

Three years after the divorce, I opened the folder again.
Not because I missed the pain.
Because I was moving apartments.
The pages looked different.
The screenshots that once made my hands shake now looked like evidence from someone else’s life.
Nathan’s messages.
Bank statements.
The postnuptial draft.
The baptism invoice.
Four thousand five hundred dollars.
I laughed when I saw it.
So much had begun over a bill.
Or seemed to.
Really, the bill was only the moment I stopped paying.
Financially.
Emotionally.
Socially.
I had paid for peace for years.
Agreeing.
Absorbing.
Explaining.
Keeping private things private so Nathan could remain comfortable.
At the baptism, I stopped.
I almost threw the folder away.
Then I kept three pages.
Not the affair messages.
Not Vanessa.
Not the financial report.
The divorce petition.
The invoice.
And one photograph of me in the red dress holding Sophie after the ceremony.
In the photograph, I looked calm.
No one looking at it could know what was inside my handbag.
I kept that.
The rest went through a shredder after Rebecca confirmed retention requirements had passed.
Page by page.
Nathan’s private life disappeared into paper strips.

I felt nothing dramatic.
That was healing too.
