CHAPTER 3: THE LIE THAT KILLED A MAN

Sheriff Daniel Brooks stepped into the arena.
"So nobody moves," he ordered.
The crowd remained silent.
Everyone's eyes stayed fixed on Ethan and Ranger.
Hank slowly approached.
His hands shook.
"I can't keep lying anymore."
The words echoed through the loudspeakers.
Every camera turned toward him.
Eight years of guilt finally broke him.
"Caleb wasn't killed by Ranger."
Murmurs swept through the crowd.
Hank continued.
"He discovered someone was abusing the bulls."
The audience grew still.
"They shocked them with electric prods... starved them... and beat them before every competition."
People stared in disbelief.
"Caleb threatened to expose everything."
Hank's voice cracked.
"The owners couldn't allow that."
He pointed toward the luxury viewing box.
"They tampered with the arena gate."
A collective gasp filled the stadium.
"When Caleb entered the arena, Ranger wasn't attacking."
"He was trying to protect him."
The sheriff frowned.
"What are you saying?"
"The falling gate crushed Caleb."
"Ranger stood over him to keep everyone else away."
"But people only saw the bull."
"The truth died with Caleb."
Hank dropped to his knees.
"I was paid to stay silent."
"I've regretted it every day since."
The sheriff immediately ordered officers toward the owner's suite.
Several men tried to escape.
None of them made it.
