Chapter 2

Chapter 2

The knock never came.

The front door swung open before anyone inside could react.

Two Military Police officers entered first.

Behind them came a Child Protective Services investigator carrying a thick folder.

My attorney, Daniel Mercer, walked in last, his leather briefcase tucked beneath one arm.

No one spoke.

The silence was louder than shouting.

Eleanor's eyes darted from one face to another.

"What is this?"

Daniel answered before I could.

"A lawful investigation."

Audrey laughed nervously.

"You can't just walk into someone's home."

Daniel looked at her.

"Actually, we can."

He placed a stack of documents on the dining table.

"The property belongs solely to Sergeant Lucas Bennett."

Eleanor frowned.

"That's impossible."

"It isn't."

Daniel slid another document across the table.

"You've never owned this house."

Her smile vanished.

Military Police Sergeant Collins stepped forward.

"We're also here regarding allegations of unlawful restraint, assault, elder fraud involving trust funds, and possible child endangerment."

Audrey nearly dropped her wine glass.

"This is ridiculous."

Sophia slowly stood using the crib for support.

She looked terrified.

I walked beside her.

"You don't have to be afraid anymore."

She looked at me as tears filled her eyes.

"I thought you wouldn't believe me."

"I always believed you."

The CPS investigator gently checked Leo's temperature.

Her expression hardened.

"He needs emergency treatment immediately."

Without hesitation, I carried my son toward the front door.

Nobody stopped me.

Nobody dared.

The emergency room moved quickly.

Leo's fever reached one hundred four point two degrees.

Doctors immediately started IV fluids and antibiotics.

The pediatrician found severe dehydration.

Another twelve hours...

The doctor stopped.

"I don't want to speculate."

He didn't have to.

I understood exactly what he meant.

Sophia sat beside the hospital bed staring at our son.

"I tried to leave."

"I know."

"They locked my phone away."

"I know."

"They told everyone I was unstable."

"I know."

She finally broke.

"I thought I was going to lose him."

I wrapped my arm around her shoulders.

"You won't lose him."

"Not while I'm here."

For the first time in months...

She believed me.

Back at the house...

Military Police searched every room.

One officer opened Eleanor's bedroom closet.

Inside sat several locked boxes.

Daniel unlocked them with a court order.

Inside were family trust records...

Jewelry that had disappeared after my grandfather's funeral...

Sophia's passport...

Her driver's license...

Her phone.

Everything they claimed had been "lost."

Audrey whispered,

"Mom..."

Eleanor finally looked afraid.

Very afraid.

Because lies collapse all at once.

Not one piece at a time.

By midnight...

Both women were escorted into separate police vehicles.

Neither looked back.

I didn't either.

For the first time in years...

The house felt quiet.

May you like

And finally...

It felt like home.
