CHAPTER 1: THE TRUTH BURIED FOR TWENTY-TWO YEARS

The ballroom remained frozen.

Nobody dared speak.

Nobody dared move.

General Thomas Hale carefully closed the pendant and placed it back into Maya's trembling hands.

"You don't remember because you were too young," he said softly.

Maya stared at him.

"My parents died when I was a baby."

Hale slowly shook his head.

"No."

The single word sent another wave of shock through the room.

"They didn't die."

Maya's heart stopped.

"What?"

The General took a long breath.

"Twenty-two years ago, your parents disappeared after uncovering evidence of a massive military corruption network. Their convoy was attacked."

The room listened in complete silence.

"Everyone believed the entire family was killed."

Hale's eyes darkened.

"But one child vanished before the attack."

Maya's hands tightened around her daughter.

"The child was me?"

Hale nodded.

"For decades we searched."

He turned toward several retired officers standing nearby.

"They searched too."

One elderly colonel wiped tears from his eyes.

"We never gave up."

Maya felt dizzy.

Everything she had believed about herself was collapsing.

The orphan.

The foster child.

The unwanted girl.

None of it had been true.

Across the room, Victoria Vaughn's face had become completely colorless.

The realization was beginning to settle over everyone.

Maya wasn't an outsider.

She belonged to one of the most respected families in the nation.

And they had just humiliated her in public.

Then another voice interrupted.

"General..."

Everyone turned.

It was Ethan.

For the first time that night, he stepped forward.

His face was pale with guilt.

"I didn't know."

Maya looked at him.

The pain in her eyes made him lower his head.

"You should have stood beside me anyway," she whispered.

Ethan had no answer.

May you like

Because she was right.

And everyone knew it.
