PART 1: The Name That Stopped the Room

The ballroom held its breath.
Richard Vance stared at Maya as if he were looking at a ghost.
Then he spoke.
"General Alexander Sterling."
The name struck the room like thunder.
Several elderly veterans immediately stood.
A few gasped.
Others simply stared in disbelief.
Victoria frowned.
"What does that have to do with her?"
The Colonel's eyes never left Maya.
"Everything."
He carefully opened the pendant.
A hidden compartment clicked open.
Inside was a faded photograph.
A young military officer.
A beautiful woman.
And a little girl no older than three.
The room fell silent.
Because the little girl looked exactly like Maya.
Victoria's face lost color.
"No..."
Richard nodded slowly.
"This pendant belonged to General Sterling's daughter."
A murmur swept through the crowd.
General Alexander Sterling was a national hero.
A legendary commander.
A man whose family had disappeared after a mysterious accident twenty-two years earlier.
Officially, no survivors had ever been found.
Until now.
Maya's hands trembled.
"I don't understand..."
The Colonel's voice softened.
"You were never abandoned, Maya."
Tears filled her eyes.
"Then why was I alone?"
Richard closed his eyes.
Because he knew the answer.
And because the answer was darker than anyone imagined.
"Because someone wanted your family erased."
The room exploded with shock.
Meanwhile, across the ballroom, Ethan finally raised his head.
For the first time that night, fear appeared in his eyes.
Because everything was changing.

And very quickly.
The worthless orphan his family despised might actually be one of the wealthiest heirs in the nation.
